Historical Tidbit:

Three Elmwood Girls' Dream
Tune-Agers
I grew up in the village of Elmwood, a suburb of East Bridgewater. In the late 1940s, we welcomed Madge Wainwright Alger to our town. Madge and her sisters were musical performers in Vaudeville years earlier. Aside from giving the “Tune-Agers” our start in 1951, she was also well-known in the musical industry.

When a group performing “Carmen” came to Brockton in the early ’50s, some of their troupe became ill. The director contacted Madge to supply three young ladies to fill in for them. I got a call from Madge, as did Sandra (Doten) Harlan and Sally (Flagg) Aldrich. (We were juniors at EBHS.) The three of us were thrilled at the prospect of performing in “Carmen” at the former Brockton Theater. We arrived backstage and changed into appropriate Spanish dresses and had make-up applied to our faces. We adopted the names Frasquita, Micaela, and Mercedes.

Imagine our thrill as we emerged onto the stage, mingling with other “real” performers, pretending to know what to do! We just made small talk among ourselves. We held cigarettes in our hands, but did not smoke them! We found out later that two Elmwood residents (Damon and Thelma Leavitt) were in the audience and were so surprised to see three Elmwood girls waltz onto the stage in the middle of the production. In one particular balcony scene, we were the only ones on stage!

We will never forget our one day of stardom. It was quite a thrill for 16-year-old girls from the little village of Elmwood!

The Taunton River Stewardship Council (TRSC) is seeking contractors with environmental planning and tree work experience to address several locations of in-stream wood within the Taunton River Watershed. Our first project for your consideration is the Town River in Bridgewater, MA.
" ... several areas along the Town River that is inundated with channel spanning wood that prevents safe recreational passage and may impair fish passage. We acknowledge that in-stream wood is ultimately a benefit for the river ecosystem, providing habitat, bank stability, and river-channel stability. We also recognize that recreation and fish passage are important values within the Taunton River system. This fragile
balance is why we are seeking proposals from qualified consultants to help us evaluate and assess these areas of channel spanning wood.
The Taunton River and its tributaries were federally designated by Congress as Wild and Scenic in 2009. With this formal designation, a local coordinating body called the Taunton River Stewardship Council (TRSC) was empowered
with the responsibility to manage, protect, and enhance the Taunton River & tributaries." "The TRSC is comprised of members from local municipalities and nonprofit entities that agree to promote long-term protection
of the Taunton River and tributaries. The TRSC also receives technical and financial resources from the National Park Service, the federal agency that administers Wild and Scenic Rivers in New England."

Climate Can-Do: Hydration in the Heat and Refillable Water Bottles

Summer is finally here! Warmer weather, more time outside, and an increase in physical activity…all of which lead to us being thirstier. Drinking enough water throughout the day is always important – our bodies are 50% to 70% water (Mayo Clinic) – and with the hot weather in the coming months, it is especially crucial to avoid dehydration. However, our hydration doesn’t need to come at the expense of our environment. According to Ban the Bottle, Americans throw away 35 billion plastic bottles every year. Additionally, only 5% of our plastics (Greenpeace) get recycled; the rest end up in trash heaps, or are litter and many end up in the ocean.

Refillable water bottles make a real difference close to home; in our drinking water; in our rivers; and right down to the ocean. By switching to refillables instead of buying single-use bottles, you are: cutting down on oil usage needed to manufacture the plastic water bottles; decreasing CO2 put out into the atmosphere through production; reducing landfill waste (University of Colorado Boulder); and decreasing the likelihood of nanoplastics in our tap. You’re also saving money and time by not buying a plastic water bottle every time you’re out and about -$1.25 may not seem like much, but it definitely adds up! If tap water isn’t for you, a filtered water dispenser and a reusable water bottle will soon pay for themselves as you consider the cost of bottled water. Most importantly: Refillable water bottles can decrease pollution in our oceans – the same ones we love to swim in over the summer. It’s an important Climate Can Do to reduce personal plastic waste; opt for refillable bottles instead of single-use plastic ones so we and our environment can flourish!

Happy 200th Birthday to East Bridgewater!

In 1823, the town of East Bridgewater established itself from the larger Bridgewater area, resulting in the great community it is today. On Saturday, June 10, 2023, citizens came together to celebrate the town’s 200th celebration at the East Bridgewater Commercial Club, which was put together by the volunteer work of many people and vendors. Despite the varied weather, the community had a blast as they engaged in events, enjoyed food and refreshments, danced to music, and even gathered around a bonfire all in honor of their town’s birthday.

Summer Afternoons

Theres adventure in the smell of blossoms as we ride our bikes .. taking in the cool evening air. My companion shifts his guitar case making it easier to pedal with. " We're almost there." He yells over his shoulder. Another half a mile of watching the cracks in the road disappear under my front tire and wind in my face. I'm looking forward to sitting comfortably with a cool drink and listening to the folk music.

“And so with the sunshine and the great bursts of leaves growing on the trees, just as things grow in fast movies, I had that familiar conviction that life was beginning over again with the summer.”
~ F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby

“It was June, and the world smelled of roses. The sunshine was like powdered gold over the grassy hillside.” ~ Maud Hart Lovelace, Betsy-Tacy and Tib
Enjoy your summer afternoons. They are the spice of life.
