Santee Falcons SOAR! Principal's Update
October 13, 2019
Principal Ansley's Weekly Message
Dear Santee Family,

As we celebrate LGBT History Month, it is an excellent time to consider the words of Harvey Milk, "All young people, regardless of sexual orientation or identity, deserve a safe and supportive environment in which to achieve their full potential."

I am proud to be a part of a school community that honors all of our students' for who they are. All of our students have the right to be in a school that respects them and provides them an environment where they feel safe, included, and encouraged to achieve their full academic and personal potential. It is in fact our duty to provide them an education that is responsive to their cultures and identities. It is important that they feel pride in themselves and their history as well as to see how many of the people who came before them struggled and suffered so those who came after them could become the people they are meant to be with less pain.

Our students should feel safe and free to speak up fearlessly, to advocate for themselves and have the courage to stand up as allies for each other, even when it's not always comfortable. It is crucial that we foster this advocacy and encourage students to protect, defend, and champion their beliefs while also being caring to others. I want to thank everyone who participated in Friday's National Coming Out Day events and urge everyone to continue to develop positive, safe learning environments for all of our students and families.

Working Together, All Santee Falcons Will Soar !

If anyone has any questions, please do not hesitate to call our main office or email Principal Susana Ansley-Gutierrez at susana.gutierrez@lausd.net.

G) Attendance:
Teachers, thank you for taking accurate attendance this past week. We have seen an increase in accurate attendance these past few days. If you receive a discrepancy sheet in your box, please complete it and return it to the attendance office.
The Math Department did an amazing job this month having the highest attendance. In honor of this, we rewarded these teachers with a goodie bag. Thank you for all you are doing to help out with our attendance rate.
We need to continue reminding our students the importance of being in school and in class. Remember we are striving for 96% or higher attendance rate for every student which means no more then 7 total absences for the year.

We have received tickets to the LA Galaxy game on 10/19/19 to recognize students who have improved attendance. Twelve freshmen were rewarded with two tickets. Great Job students!

Please continue to use the PSA online referral form if you have a concern regarding any students attendance. The PSA's will respond to the referral in a timely manner.

We have voted to begin actual enforcement the 1st day of second semester, thank you for your patience and flexibility.

K) There will be an Enrichment PD after-school on Tuesday regarding iPads for Teachers.

L) Office Hours:

Office Hours have begun. Please notify your students of the day and hour that you will be available. Tutor X time will be compensated 1 hour a week per teacher. Door sheets are done and will be posted this week. Lastly, if you have chosen lunch time, please still adhere to the objective of office hours which is to support any Falcon with academic support and to answer any questions they may have. All teachers who offer office hours are to turn in their office hours at the end of each month.

M) City Year Tutoring
City Year tutoring has begun in the student cafeteria from 3pm-5pm. Please encourage students to attend tutoring for extra help. Any student may attend.

N) PSW:

A reminder that NO email referral should be sent to the PSW's. We can not send confidential information via email. Please complete a referral form and place it in their boxes. They will respond in a timely manner.

The PSW hosted a DIY Stress Ball table this week at lunch time in the quad. Students and staff were able to make stress balls to help them out with relieving stress.

O) Intervention and Prevention:
Our new school-wide cell phone policy campaign starts this month. Flyers, posters, and videos are being created to help promote the new policy. We need to continue to let students know what the policy is and that the policy will be in full effect starting the first day of second semester. Reminder that the new policy prohibits cell phone use in the classroom. If you need assistance with technology that can be used in the class, please see Ms. M. Miller and she can assist you. She will be offering various enrichment Professional Developments to assist you with this.
Teachers, we need to remember to document referrals in the MiSiS system. The Intervention Coordinators are receiving students in their office without referrals. We need to make sure all of these incidents are documented.

Please remember that there are no passes for the first 10 minutes of class. Also if students are sent out of your class they will need a vest. The campus aides will be sending the students back to class.

Your copy should address 3 key questions: Who am I writing for? (Audience) Why should they care? (Benefit) What do I want them to do here? (Call-to-Action)

Create a great offer by adding words like "free" "personalized" "complimentary" or "customized." A sense of urgency often helps readers take an action, so think about inserting phrases like "for a limited time only" or "only 7 remaining!"
