Corporate earnings drive big stock gains | |
In last month’s newsletter we speculated that several prominent earnings reports could be especially impactful in October. And, wow. For sure, it was an interesting month, resulting in several stock market record highs, plus some jaw-dropping market cap valuations. NVIDIA broke the $5 trillion mark in terms of the company’s overall worth (according to stock value), and Apple broke the $4 trillion mark. See all the recaps on some of the big earnings reports in our next edition of the GRAnderson Wealth Management Group Monthly Economic Update when it gets posted here toward the end of this week.

| | NASDAQ has second straight month up 4% | | The stock market is on a roll, and October results fell right in line, as you will see in the next edition of our Monthly Economic Update next week. The Dow Jones and S&P 500 have recorded six straight months in plus territory, and the NASDAQ is on a seven-month streak. And not just by a little bit! The NASDAQ index was up more than 4% in September, and then again in October. The explanation is in the Monthly Economic Update, to be posted here by the end of this week. Call us if you have any trouble finding it. | | Worrisome aspects of the government shutdown | | As always, the financial markets were subject to an assortment of economic influences, not just earnings reports. World events, tariffs, housing prices, healthcare costs and other factors do a constant push and pull. One of the more significant negative influences (which corporate earnings have managed to outweigh) is the shutdown of the U.S. government, as we will discuss in the next Monthly Economic Update. If the shutdown continues much longer, we can expect to see some cracks begin to appear in the economy. | | What we're watching at GRAnderson Wealth | Well, we’re back to watching the Federal Reserve’s interest-rate decisions. Not that we ever really quit. But the board’s next meeting Dec. 9-10 will be especially interesting. Here’s why: During the summer, when the labor markets began to show signs of a struggle, experts predicted that the Fed would ratchet down its interest rate over the course of the next three meetings. In the first two meetings (September and October), that’s exactly what happened (by a total of a half percentage point). But in the meantime, we witnessed a monkey wrench of sorts. The federal government shut down, crucial economic reports became unavailable, and the Federal Reserve complained that it is now somewhat “flying blind.” So how to make that interest-rate decision in December? We will see. If the Fed decides that “no movement” is the safest way to go, Wall Street is not going to be pleased. | | What really constitutes a credible stock tip? | | In our most recent episode of Grand Turbo Moneycast, we explore the whole concept of “stock tips,” including where to find them, where NOT to find them, and the most solid ways in which they are derived. Listen to Gregory Anderson’s analysis here on Spotify, and don’t miss his “Tip of the Month” at the end of the show. | |
