A Visit to the Stormwater BMPs of Howard County
By: Ashleigh Thur
Featuring: Radhika Wijetunge, Engineering Specialist at the Howard County Department of Public Works Bureau of Environmental Services Stormwater Management Division
Last month, CSN's interns joined Radhika Wijetunge for an up close look at some of the stormwater solutions, and challenges, in Howard County. In this article, Ashleigh takes us on a behind the scenes journey - what we saw, what we learned, and just how Howard County manages to keep track of over 17,000 BMPs. You may just come away inspired to go on your own stormwater inspection tour).

Hosted by The Green Infrastructure Leadership Exchange
For municipalities looking to meet stormwater management goals, the biggest opportunities may be right next door. Schools, parks and places of worship represent an underutilized frontier for green infrastructure, offering meaningful acreage, community trust and long-term partnership potential.
Drawing on their experience delivering green infrastructure at scale across public and private properties, Greenprint will walk practitioners through a proven, programmatic approach to engaging these three landowner types that can dramatically accelerate a municipality's ability to hit stormwater targets while building lasting neighborhood benefits.

September 16th, 2026
1pm - 2:30pm EST
Hosted by Center for Watershed Protection
We will explore how the application of AI, particularly within systems like Opti's Continuous Monitoring and Adaptive Control (CMAC), is fundamentally changing how stormwater professionals design both parcels and communities. Discover the direct applications and benefits of using AI-driven optimization to enhance your CMAC program’s design and planning workflows. And - Open-source real-time control (RTC) offers a low-cost, adaptable retrofit strategy for meeting that need. RTC systems pair water level sensors, forecast-driven logic, and automated outlet valves to actively manage SCM storage and release, turning passive infrastructure into responsive infrastructure without requiring full reconstruction. This presentation will share progress from pilot RTC installations on wet ponds, dry detention basins, and a rainwater harvesting system, and compare open-source and commercial RTC platforms.
