Spotlight On:
Be Part of RISE Drug Free MKE’s Community Impact
| |
|
Members of Milwaukee County’s prevention community are excited about the new direction their work is taking. This spring, the former Milwaukee County Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition (MCSAP) revived their name and mission as RISE Drug Free MKE. Coalition members are now tasked with "raising awareness of substance (mis)use, and, through inclusive education, elevating our entire community, from our youth to our elders, out of the harms caused by substance (mis) use."
Coalition members have developed a new strategic plan that incorporates best practices to utilize in a post-pandemic Milwaukee County. To fulfill their plan, RISE is seeking community members who want to step up and be part of the solution by joining one of the coalition’s new Action Teams:
-
Youth Action Team: Centering the needs and voices of Milwaukee County youth in prevention efforts
-
Mental Health and Wellness Action Team: Promoting community-wide wellness to support prevention efforts
-
Substance Prevention Action Team: Supporting practices that prevent upstream substance use and mitigate downstream effects of substance (mis)use
-
Data Action Team: Using data to promote coalition learning to support prevention efforts

Milwaukee Common Council
Unanimously Approves Vape Shop Rules
| |
|
After a six-month moratorium on new vape shops in the city of Milwaukee, last week alders unanimously approved new rules on new vape and smoke shops within the city. The rules, sponsored by Alderman Jonathan Brostoff, would prohibit new vape and smoke shops from operating within 500 feet of another vape or smoke shop, and bar them from opening within 1,000 feet of a school. Health-promoting leaders and organizations—including the American Lung Association, the City of Milwaukee Tobacco-Free Alliance, El-Bethel Church of God in Christ, FACT youth, Milwaukee Fire Chief Aaron Lipski, Wisconsin Hispanic Latino Tobacco Prevention Network, and Wisconsin Tobacco Prevention and Poverty Network—raised awareness of the harms posed by smoking and vaping to our youth and other communities targeted by commercial tobacco and vape companies, including LGBTQ+ people, people experiencing poverty, and people of color. The rules now go to Mayor Cavalier Johnson for hiss vote.
