AKG Newsworthy NOLA
2022 #6
Saturday April 09, 2022
April is here with all of her radiant beauty and perfect weather. We are planning for our music festival season and our first exhibit is the suits of Big Chief Shaka Zulu of the Golden Feather Hunter Tribe. This is such a gift to see these stunning sculptural masterpieces up close and in a gallery setting. His is a very unique culture.

Chief Zulu says, “Not all of us got here from the slave trade. Many of us have a history of being part of this culture for many years before that . . . So this culture (Black Masking Indians) is mainly about paying homage to indigenous people."

We hope to see one of these masterpieces placed in a museum setting, as that is where they belong. Should you be connected in that way, please share this information to help get them
in the broader public eye.

We recognise and celebrate Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson on her historic confirmation to serve as the first Black Woman on the Supreme Court. No matter where you sit on the political aisle, fairness and equity to all is a cornerstone of our nation
and I'm proud to see it manifesting.

The unprovoked war on Ukraine and the actions there are abhorrent and unconscionable.
Our hearts go out to the people of Ukraine.

Peace Now

Chief Shaka, a Black Masking Indian for over nineteen years, is a leading Ambassador of New Orleans Indian/Indigenous Culture; a leading figure in the New Orleans African American Carnival Traditions.

His family lineage is both of the Indigenous people of New Orleans and those who were enslaved from Africa.

Chief Shaka has been a part of the African/Haitian Music Culture in New Orleans. As a small child, he began stilt dancing eventually becoming a member of the
Skull and Bones Krewe.

Chief Shaka's first experience in the Black Masking Culture was playing drums behind Big Chief Smiley Ricks and his band "Indians of the Nation". As a young man he toured internationally with the world renown Donald Harrison Jr. as a drummer in his band "Congo Nation".

Chief Shaka and his wife Niamah are the producers and musical directors of the exciting touring stage production, New Orleans Voices of Congo Square. A vibrant historical narrative of New Orleans magical music, colorful dance and mysterious Indian Culture – the Black Carnival Traditions of New Orleans.

Chief Shaka Zulu has exhibited his masking Indian suits both nationally and internationally at museums and festivals.
