March 2025 | Newsletter

Personally, I think books are sort of like the baseline

for libraries [...] What we do here at this branch is

less about books and more about community and

the other needs that people have.

–Dorchester, MA Library Branch

Manager Celia Contelmo

Writing for Boston Magazine in November of 2023, Tom McGrath interviewed Boston Public Library librarians and BPL president David Leonard for a feature story inviting readers to “ride shotgun while I explore and—spoiler alert—sort of gaze in wonder at what they [libraries] do.” We too invite you to gaze in wonder, or at least appreciation, as we chronicle the upcoming opportunities at our own, vibrant library here in Greenfield.

Although you will certainly see kids happily weighed-down by the big stacks of brightly-colored storybooks they've selected, and adults checking many hundreds of books in and out all day long, we also invite you to read our lists of programming and services offered as “natural extensions of the reference and research function libraries have always offered.” As BPL president Leonard suggests, “You have a question, you have a quest, you have a piece of information you’re seeking,” and “once upon a time, such quests might have been straightforward [...] but today, they’re broader and perhaps more urgent, at least if you’re willing to listen.”

Like the Boston libraries, our library “has extended its reach beyond just literacy to meeting community needs more broadly”—the Greenfield librarians and library director listen, and unflaggingly they answer.

Celebrate the “Wicked Week" with movies, flying monkeys, and chocolate! Greenfield Public Library invites you to experience the wonders of Oz with “Wicked Week,” filled with Oz-related movies and activities from March 24-27.

In addition to the movies, you can enter a drawing for a chance to win a GIANT piece of golden-wrapped chocolate – your very own "yellow brick road" ! Throughout the month, stop by for a little Monkey Business ….literally! Our librarians are going bananas... training a troop of (pretend) flying monkeys to soar through the library! Keep your eyes peeled for their mischievous antics.

Due to licensing restrictions we can’t share the names of the movies, but we can give you the following hints:

Monday, March 24, 5:30 pm, Community Meeting Room

When a nasty neighbor tries to have her dog put to sleep, Dorothy takes her dog, Toto, and starts to run away. A tornado appears and carries her to the magical land of Oz. Wishing to return home, she begins to travel to the city of Oz where a great wizard lives.

Tuesday, March 25, 5:30 pm, Community Meeting Room

Dorothy is a 24-year-old Manhattan kindergarten teacher who is whisked away from her inner-city neighborhood via a snowstorm to the mysterious land of Oz. Oz is a sprawling, decaying, nightmarish, and dangerous megalopolis that resembles the physical characteristics of New York City.

Thursday, March 27, 1:30 pm, Community Meeting Room

A young woman, misunderstood because of her unusual green skin, has yet to discover her true power, and Glinda, a popular young woman, gilded by privilege and ambition, has yet to discover her true heart. The two meet as students at Shiz University in the fantastical Land of Oz and forge an unlikely but profound friendship.

Doors open 30 minutes before the show starts. Outside food and drink are allowed. All movies start at 2 p.m. and run until completed, unless otherwise indicated. Light refreshments will be served.

For more information, contact Jeremiah Rood at jeremiah.rood@greenfield-ma.gov or call (413) 772-1544.

Roundhouse Spring Craft Series

Presented by the Greenfield Public Library and The Franklin County Agricultural Society

Greenfield Public Library and the Franklin County Agricultural Society have joined forces to help you create that craft you’ve always talking about entering in the fair.

Do you visit the Roundhouse at the Franklin County Fair each summer and think to yourself, “I should really enter something in the fair”? Here’s your chance!

This spring, the Library will be offering multiple craft programs to help jump-start your creativity. This fun series of practical craft classes will be held in the library’s makerspace and run by a variety of talented instructors.

All classes are free and materials will be provided, unless otherwise noted. Space is limited and pre-registration is required for each class. Books on each subject will be available for check-out at each class.

At the conclusion of each class, participants will be given information on how and when to enter the projects in the fair.
