NATIONAL DING-A-LING DAY
National Ding-a-Ling Day on December 12th encourages us to reconnect with people we once talked to often.
Ding-a-Lings on this day call the people they haven't heard from in a while. It may be an old classmate, co-worker, or neighbor from years ago. Or perhaps a call will go out to the child who used to mow the grass during the summer. How about that couple who carpooled for soccer? What was their name? Many people slip out of our lives who would love to hear the ding-a-ling of a call from you. Why don't you join the Ding-a-ling club and call someone this year?

NATIONAL POINSETTIA DAY
Each year on the 12th of December, people across the United States celebrate one of the most recognizable plants of the holidays on National Poinsettia Day.
In 16th-century Mexico, the connection between the poinsettia plant and the Christmas season begins. According to legend, a girl wanted desperately to celebrate Jesus's birthday. Worried, the girl feared she would have no gift to offer because she was so poor. An angel tells her to give any gift with love. After gathering weeds from alongside the road, the young girl placed them in the manger. Miraculously the weeds bloomed into beautiful red stars.
The poinsettia initially came to the United States with Joel Roberts Poinsett, an American botanist and the first U.S. Minister to Mexico. In 1825, he sent cuttings home to Charleston, South Carolina.
However, it wasn't until the early 1920s that the poinsettia started taking root in American culture. Paul Ecke, a second-generation farmer in California, discovered a grafting technique that caused the seedlings to branch. Hawking their Christmas flower at roadside stands, Paul Ecke Jr. later advanced sales of the poinsettia through shipping and marketing.

Louisiana Mosquito Control Association and the New Orleans Mosquito, Termite and Rodent Control Board co-host the Annual Louisiana Mosquito Control Association’s Education Day
NEW ORLEANS – The 67th Annual Meeting of the Louisiana Mosquito Control Association (LMCA) will be held in New Orleans from Dec. through 12. This meeting brings together operational administrators, staff members, educators, students, state employees, and industry representatives from across the state to discuss best practices for mosquito abatement and preventing the diseases they transmit based on sound scientific principles. Each year, in conjunction with the professional meeting, a day is designated to invite local schools to educate students about mosquitoes and the activities of local mosquito abatement districts.
The Annual LMCA Education Day will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the NOMTRCB Building located at 2100 Leon C. Simon Dr. This event will introduce over 500 students from 5 local schools to mosquito biology, surveillance, and control methods.
The LMCA Education Committee is composed of mosquito abatement professionals from the NOMTRCB Board, East Baton Rouge Mosquito Abatement and Rodent Control, West Baton Rouge Mosquito Control, Iberia Parish Mosquito District, Jefferson Davis Parish Mosquito Abatement, Calcasieu Parish Mosquito Control, Ouachita Parish Mosquito Abatement and Tulane University. Members of the LMCA Education Committee and NOMTRCB employees will staff exhibits designed to provide students and teachers with instructional hands-on experience. Students will be presented with concepts on general mosquito biology (habitat), life cycle (metamorphosis), morphology (speciation), behavior, medical importance, and equipment used to control mosquitoes. The goal of this event is to stimulate students’ interest in science through an interactive experience and empower them with an understanding of mosquito biology and the integrated efforts to manage them.

The Continental Army spent the winter of 1777–1778 at Valley Forge, a naturally defensible plateau near Philadelphia. The encampment lasted from December 19, 1777 to June 19, 1778.
The Continental Army's winter at Valley Forge was a trying time. The army faced cold temperatures, rain, snow, and a lack of supplies, shelter, and footwear. Washington ordered his soldiers to build huts and search for straw to use as bedding. Despite the harsh conditions, Washington used the time to drill his troops, and by the start of the 1778 campaigning season, the army was better prepared for combat.

Many of the most well-known Hanukkah traditions are universal. Whether you’re in Argentina or Zimbabwe, Jews will mark the eight-day festival by lighting a menorah, eating fried foods and recounting the victorious story of the Maccabees and the restoration of the Temple in Jerusalem.
But Jews around the world have also developed Hanukkah customs that are unique to their local community. For example, while jelly-filled donuts (sufganiyot) are a mainstay among Ashkenazi Jews, Hanukkah in southern India is celebrated by making gulab jamnun, a milk-based ball of dough that is deep fried and then drenched in sugar syrup. The sweet treat is also consumed by non-Jewish Indians during other celebrations like Diwali.
Indian Jews enjoying gulab jamnun is far from the only example of a distinct tradition that a community has developed in Diaspora. Here are eight more customs that go beyond playing dreidel or giving Hanukkah gelt.
1. Hanging the Menorah On the Wall
Most Ashkenazi Jews place a menorah in the window in order to publicize the miracle of Hanukkah. In Morocco, Algeria and other North African communities, it is customary to hang the menorah on a hook in the doorway, beside the mezuzah. Putting the menorah near the mezuzah was thought to enhance the protection already offered by the mezuzah. If you look at menorahs made in North Africa, you will notice that many have a ring at the top, as well as a flat metal backing, so that the menorah could be safely hung.
Some Jews affiliated with Chabad also hang their menorahs. This group traces the tradition back to the Talmud (Shabbat 22a) which describes the menorah as being positioned on the doorpost like a mezuzah:
Rav Shmuel from Difti said: … the halakhah is to place [the menorah] on the left so that the Hanukkah lamp will be on the left and the mezuzah on the right. Then, one who enters the house will be surrounded by mitzvot.
2. Constructing a Menorah from Potatoes
Jews in Romania, as well as Austria and other central European communities, would scrape out potatoes, filling each potato space with oil and a wick to serve as the menorah. Rather than putting all eight out at once, each day they would add another potato. While the origin of this custom is unclear, it likely came about due to economic struggles.
3. Lighting an Extra Shamash
The Jewish community of Aleppo, which comprised mostly Sephardic Jews who had escaped the Inquisition, lit an extra shamash (helper candle) on each night of Hanukkah. Several explanations exist — some say that the second shamash was meant to honor God and acknowledge the divine intervention that brought them to safety. Others say the custom was a nod toward the non-Jews of Aleppo, who welcomed them as refugees.
4. Glass Boxes On Display
Before mass immigration and the establishment of the State of Israel in the 20th century, Jews lived in Jerusalem for centuries and followed the ruling that the menorah’s lights needed to be placed outside the home for all to see. This decree originates in the Talmud (Shabbat 21b):
However, Jerusalem winters are often wet and windy, so the community began crafting aquarium-like glass boxes to protect their flames. Inside, Jerusalem Jews put small cups of olive oil and lit a wick to correspond with each night. Some of Jerusalem’s oldest homes even have a shelf carved out of the home’s exterior walls to place the glass boxes in.
Today, many Israeli Jews have adopted this practice, although some will simply place a hanukkiah with candles inside the box, rather than using oil.
5. Chag HaBanot: A Celebration of Women
Jewish communities in Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, Iraq, Iran, Turkey, Morocco, Greece and Yemen celebrate another holiday during Hanukkah, known in Judeo-Arabic as Eid Al Bnat or Chag HaBanot in Hebrew, both of which translate to the Festival of the Daughters.
Observed on Rosh Chodesh Tevet (which falls on the sixth night of Hanukkah), the girls and women of the community refrain from work and gather to recall Jewish heroines, particularly Judith, the Jewish woman who lived during the time of the Maccabees and helped prevent the impending siege of Jerusalem by decapitating the invading Assyrian general.
Chag HaBanot festivities vary from community to community, but often include eating sweets and fried treats, dancing, visiting the synagogue to kiss the Torah scrolls and singing well into the night. Girls approaching bat mitzvah age, as well as women who were engaged, were also publicly celebrated during Chag HaBanot.
Read more about Chag HaBanot here.
6. Neighborhood Wine Tastings
The region of Avignon, located in southern France, is renowned for its wineries. During the Saturday night that falls during Hanukkah, after Shabbat ended, the Jews of Avignon open a new bottle of local wine in their homes and make a toast. Then, each family travels around their neighborhood to taste the wines chosen by their neighbors and to toast to the miracle of Hanukkah.
7. No Melachot Near the Menorah
It is a longstanding practice among North African and Middle Eastern Jewish communities, as well as Haredi Ashkenazi Jews, that as long as the menorah is lit, women refrain from doing melachot, the types of work that are forbidden on Shabbat and holidays. While Hanukkah is not a holiday that requires Jews to refrain from labor, this custom can be traced back to laws codified by both Ashkenazi and Sephardic leaders who ruled, pre-electricity, that the light of the menorah was not to be used for anything besides enjoying the holiday.
8. The Ninth Night of Hanukkah
In some parts of Morocco, Jewish children spend the last day of Hanukkah going from house to house to collect the leftover cotton wicks that Moroccan Jews used in place of candles. At sundown, the wicks are ignited to create a large bonfire, and each community gathers to sing, dance and even leap over the fire, which was believed to bring good luck to the jumper, especially to women seeking a partner or struggling to conceive.
These are only a sampling of the many traditions that various communities around the world have developed over time. Click here to learn more about the diversity of the Jewish people and some of its less widespread customs.
8 Hanukkah Traditions From Around the World
From bonfires to hanging menorahs to an extra candle, here are some lesser-known Jewish Hanukkah traditions from all over the globe.

According to most sources, the appliance that uses the most water on a daily basis is the toilet.
Explanation: While other appliances like washing machines and dishwashers use significant amounts of water, the average toilet flush uses considerably more, often due to the large water reservoir needed for flushing.

GINGERBREAD HOUSE DAY
Gingerbread House Day on December 12th recognizes a family tradition for many around the country.
A favorite food of an Armenian monk, Gregory of Nicopolis, brought gingerbread to Europe around 992 AD and taught French Christians to bake it. Since gingerbread was often used in religious ceremonies, monks baked to be sturdy to molded into images of saints.
We can thank the Brothers' Grimm for a gingerbread house, though. Through their tale of Hansel and Gretel, they introduce an evil witch who lives in a house made of gingerbread. It didn't take long for the German gingerbread guilds to pick up the idea. Soon, they put gingerbread houses to a more festive use making snowy cottages made from the spicy-sweet treat.
Today, we can spend the day baking, cutting, and building to our heart's delight. Kits take some steps out of the process so we can get right down to constructing our winter wonderlands.

NATIONAL AMBROSIA DAY
Right in the middle of the holiday season, National Ambrosia Day brings a refreshing salad to the celebration table. On December 12th, bring ambrosia to your holiday dinner or celebration and go home with an empty bowl.
Ambrosia, according to Greek mythology, is the nectar of the gods, endowing strength and immortality to those who eat it. The term itself can mean something especially delectable to taste or smell.
The earliest recipes for ambrosia salad appeared around the 1800s. The recipes called for citrus fruit, coconut, and sugar. However, those who find coconut disagreeable leave it out of the recipe. We must note that if you omit coconut, a forceful objection could be heard from a true southerner.
A genuine ambrosia salad is served the same day it is prepared. However, more modern recipes suggest overnight refrigeration of the dish. Other ingredients often added to the salad include pineapple, nuts, cherries, apples, bananas, whipped cream, or yogurt.

🎄🎄
February 13, 1899
Today in 1899, Louisiana experienced the coldest day on record. The thermometer would plunge to 16 degrees below zero at Minden-the record for the coldest reading ever taken in the state, and zero degrees or colder was recorded as far south as New Roads. Baton Rouge and New Orleans would record two and seven degrees above zero, respectively, and on the next day, Mardi Gras in New Orleans, the Krewe of Rex Parade (pictured) was delayed while snow was removed from the route. Later that week, ice floes were seen at the mouth of the Mississippi for the first time in recorded history.

With uplifting choreography by Christian Denice and Diogo De Lima, as well as live music by Ted Joyner, these performances aim to inspire with a sense of hope and positive momentum.
HERE is an immersive exploration of time and place, centered around the history and present-day significance of the Marigny Opera House, originally built in 1847 as Holy Trinity Catholic Church by New Orleans’ German immigrant community. With choreography by internationally acclaimed choreographer Christian Denice and Artistic Director Diogo de Lima, this program of two contemporary ballets reflects on the passage of time, the power of presence, and the historical narratives embedded in the Marigny Opera House, and the Marigny Opera Ballet achieves yet a higher level of artistic and technical achievement.
This program fuses classical and contemporary elements to bring the past into conversation with the present. Music for HERE is composed by Ted Joyner (of Generationals) and performed live by The Delachaise Ensemble (featuring string quartet, bassoon, and piano). Jeff Pagano collaborates on orchestration and arrangement, while Brian Danos – composer, producer, and electronic experimentalist – will assist with both arrangement and performance, utilizing sequencers, samplers, and analog synthesizers to enhance the score.

Friday, December 13 · 5 - 6:30pm CST
Location
The Garden District Book Shop
2727 Prytania Street New Orleans, LA 70130
Gypsy-Rose Blanchard will be at the Garden District Book Shop December 13 for an author meet & greet for her memoir My Time to Stand.
A victim of her mother’s Munchausen by proxy and child abuse survivor, Gypsy-Rose Blanchard’s unique and controversial case made headlines across the world. Now, she’s finally free to start living her life on her terms—and to tell her own story as only she can.
Forced to use a wheelchair in public and endure a lifetime of faux illness, fraud, and exploitation, Gypsy was subjected not only to her mother’s medical, physical, and emotional abuse, but deprived of childhood milestones. Prevented from attending school or socializing, Gypsy’s formative years were defined by pain and isolation.
After serving 8 years in prison for the role she played in her mother Dee Dee’s murder, Gypsy is embracing her fresh start—and reminding all of us that it’s never too late. Featuring Blanchard family photos and new facts about Gypsy’s life that she previously kept private, My Time to Stand offers an unprecedented look at the real Gypsy proudly embarking on her ongoing journey to recovery and self-discovery.
The evening will begin at 5:00 PM. Early Bird tickets are now on sale for $35 and include a signed copy of My Time to Stand and a photo opp with Gypsy. Guests are encouraged to knock out some holiday shopping while they wait around The Rink.

Staff photo by Ian McNulty
More than three years after massive hurricane damage closed its doors, Central Grocery, the historic market and deli famous for its muffuletta sandwich, is finally set to return.
Central Grocery now plans to reopen on Saturday, Dec. 14, with regular hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, confirms Tommy Tusa, one of the shop's third-generation family owners.
The return of the market at 923 Decatur St. will restore a New Orleans icon that’s beloved by locals — and a bucket list stop for tourists.
The Central Grocery muffuletta will be available, and the shop’s retail shelves and deli cases will again be filled with Italian food products and other specialty items.

Central Grocery dates to 1906 and an era when the French Quarter was home to so many Italian immigrants that it was sometimes known as Little Palermo. The neighborhood was dotted with Italian groceries serving the microcosms of local life that developed here. Most are gone, but Central Grocery endured, in large part because of its muffuletta.
That long history was thrown into doubt by disaster.
During Hurricane Ida in 2021, a large portion of the three-story townhouse that rose above Central Grocery’s own two-story building collapsed, dumping tons of masonry down through the market’s roof. The building remained open to the elements for weeks, including through a tropical depression that lashed the area that same year.
The work to bring back Central Grocery was no mere round of repairs, but rather a complete rebuild of the Decatur Street property. At one point, the space was reduced to a floor and the three brick walls around it.
The Tusa family was determined to rebuild. Facing what was essentially a blank slate, they had a decision about how to bring it back — either replicating what was there or making a more modern deli. They chose to go back to their roots, and bring back the store along the lines that people remember.
“I wanted it to be like it was before. I feel I owe that to my family. We owe it to the people and to the city,” Tusa said.
A muffuletta network
The muffuletta is like an antipasto platter crossed with a sandwich, and Central Grocery has become synonymous with it. The house version is striated with layers of mortadella, salami and ham, Swiss and provolone cheese, and then topped with olive salad, a briny mix of marinated olives and vegetables squeaking with oil, all on a distinctive round seeded loaf.
All the time the French Quarter shop was closed, Central Grocery muffulettas have remained available thanks to moves the company took during the pandemic to stay afloat.
Working from a commercial-grade commissary kitchen in Kenner, Central Grocery has been shipping its signature sandwich nationally through the service Goldbelly, and distributing them through other New Orleans-area stores.
That network of retail locations has grown, and will continue as the French Quarter market returns. Tusa said working with these other businesses has been instrumental in keeping staff employed during the long rebuilding process.

Comedy House New Orleans
The most unique comedy show in New Orleans is The Open Mic From Hell, hosted by Chris Trew (as seen on MTV, Comedy Central, America's Got Talent)
CHNO ( Comedy house New Orleans)
609-610 Fulton St
New Orleans, LA 70130
Mon,December 16
8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
(Entry at 7:30 pm)
The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.
Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.
The list of performers? A total mystery.
The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.
How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.
When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.
Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

New Orleans Bowl matchup is set. See which teams will play in Dec. 19 game.
Georgia Southern and Sam Houston State will meet in the 24th New Orleans Bowl on Dec. 19 in the Caesars Superdome.
Kickoff for the first meeting between the two schools is 6 p.m. The game will air on ESPN2.
“This matchup is an incredible opportunity to showcase the hospitality of New Orleans,” bowl executive director Billy Ferrante said.
Georgia Southern (8-4, 6-2 Sun Belt) finished second to Marshall in the league’s Eastern Division despite a 24-23 victory against the Thundering Herd. Late-season losses to Old Dominion and Troy denied the Eagles the championship game berth.
Sam Houston (9-3, 6-2 Conference USA) would have played Jacksonville State for the league title if Western Kentucky did not defeat the Gamecocks, 19-17, on a last-second field goal last week.
Still it’s been a significant year for the Bearcats, who are playing in their first bowl game in the program’s second season at the FBS level.
However, Sam Houston will be without longtime coach K.C. Keeler was named the coach at Temple earlier this week after 11 seasons at the Huntsville, Texas, school.
Offensive coordinator Brad Cornelsen and assistant head coach John Johnson are in charge of the team for the bowl game according to athletic director Bobby Williams, who added that both are under consideration to succeed Keeler.
“Coaching changes are never easy,” Williams said. “But they also give you a chance to evaluate your program and we have a very strong candidate pool thanks to the job K.C. did.
“At the same time, it’s very important to us to make this the best bowl experience possible for the players who have put in so much strong work to get us into this position.”
Georgia Southern is in its seventh bowl in 10 years at the FBS level and the third straight under former Southern Cal coach Clay Helton. The Eagles improved from 6-7 the last two years.
It’s the second New Orleans Bowl appearance for Georgia Southern. The first came in the COVID-affected 2020 season, which saw 11 bowls cancelled when the Eagles played Louisiana Tech in a virtually empty Superdome due to game restrictions that also limited the teams not coming to New Orleans until the day before the game and leaving immediately thereafter.
“Billy and his staff did their best under the circumstances,” said Georgia Southern athletic director Jared Benko, who was then deputy athletic director. “The best thing was the outcome (Georgia Southern won, 35-3).
“Now we’re getting to return to Eagle Nation behind us. Our fans love going to bowl games and are especially looking forward to coming to a great city like New Orleans.”
Likewise, Williams said, Sam Houston fans will be enthused about coming to New Orleans.

Super Bowl LIX may happen more than three weeks before Fat Tuesday, but the host committee wants to make sure the city -- and the throngs of visitors in town for the NFL's championship game -- get the carnival experience.
The day before the game, February 8, there will be a Mardi Gras-style parade complete with elaborate floats, marching bands, and throws.
Our partners at NOLA.com report details of the parade are still being finalized, but float-builder Barry Kern says it will likely be a 20-float parade made up of signature floats from various krewes.
And because it is not an official carnival parade, corporate sponsors will also be a part of it.
Todd Graves, founder of Baton Rouge-based Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers, will serve as grand marshal.
Rather than follow one of the traditional Mardi Gras routes, the Super Bowl parade will line up on Elysian Fields in the Marigny, parade up Decatur Street along the French Quarter, then take Tchoupitoulas St. to Poydras, turn up to St. Charles Ave., then proceed along St. Charles to St. Joseph St. just before reaching Harmony Circle.

Super Bowl LIX pre-game show features all New Orleans and Louisiana musicians
The NFL announced on Thanksgiving that the Super Bowl LIX pre-game telecast will spotlight singers and musicians from New Orleans and Louisiana.
Jon Batiste, who grew up in Kenner and attended St. Augustine High School and the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, will sing the national anthem in the Caesars Superdome ahead of kickoff on Feb. 9.
Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews, who grew up in Treme, will team up with contemporary Christian singer and Lafayette native Lauren Daigle to perform "America the Beautiful." They have previously made guest appearances with one another onstage and on recordings.
And contemporary R&B singer Ledisi, who was born and raised in New Orleans before moving to California, will perform "Lift Every Voice and Sing."
“We’re honored to work with this year’s pregame lineup to celebrate the rich musical legacy of New Orleans and the entire state,” said Seth Dudowsky, head of music at the NFL, in a news release. "The Super Bowl is a rare moment to unite fans around the world, and this year’s performers will bring the energy, soul and vibrant sounds of the region to a global stage, as we kickoff Super Bowl LIX with a celebration to remember.”

Just two days after Super Bowl LIX, Jefferson Parish will celebrate its 200th birthday on Feb. 11. Bicentennial festivities kicked off at the State of Jefferson address Tuesday with the unveiling of the official poster, depicting a pelican before the Mississippi River in vivid pink and blue hues. It is illustrated by Louisiana artist Becky Fos, known for designing the 2023 state "I Voted" sticker, modeled after the Louisiana state flag.
A limited supply of signed and numbered posters can be purchased for $150, with proceeds going toward the Jefferson Community Foundation.

The parish will celebrate the bicentennial on Feb. 11 with a Light the Night event, followed by a community-wide king cake party at Lakeside Mall on Feb. 15.
The following month, a bicentennial-themed Senior Expo will take place at the Alario Center on March 20, and a "Park to Park" 10K run will happen March 22 at Lafreniere Park.
Festivities for the parish's 200th birthday will come to a close June 14 with the Bicentennial Ball at Lakeside Mall, hosted by the Jefferson Community Foundation. Lee Sheng said she wanted parish events to involve the entire community and asked residents and local business owners to get involved.
"I want our bicentennial to feel like everybody's a part of it," Lee Sheng said in her address.
