CEO Update
2021 could not have started off stronger for our region than with the major announcement of Civica selecting Petersburg for a premier manufacturing facility on January 21st. To summarize, Civica’s announcement means the Gateway Region is now home to three impressive companies who will work together to manufacture the most basic pharmaceutical ingredients for generic medicines right here in our community. This means reshoring jobs to the USA and Virginia, and our region will play a critical role in producing drugs to treat COVID-19. 

To add to the excitement, I am thrilled with the uptick we are seeing in project activity overall. We are working with new businesses, assisting our current companies with potential expansions, and calling on firms to learn how we can help them fill their workforce pipelines. I expect future growth in our target sectors of advanced manufacturing, logistics and signature retail.

Civica Selects Petersburg, Elevating Pharma Cluster in the Region

Pharmaceutical manufacturer Civica will invest $124.5 million to establish its first in-house pharmaceutical manufacturing operation in the City of Petersburg. The project will create 186 new jobs. Civica is a nonprofit generic drug company launched in 2018 to address the problem of chronic generic drug shortages and high drug prices, and a key partner for the new U.S. government-funded partnership with Phlow Corporation, Medicines for All Institute, and AMPAC Fine Chemicals.
