Hard times have become even harder for the millions of American families facing food insecurity. Federal legislation passed in July represents one of the largest reductions to the SNAP program in history and is expected to result in millions of families losing some or all of their benefits.

Just as food banks and pantries were preparing to help families absorb these cuts, the ongoing government shutdown has created another crisis. This is the first time in history that the USDA has chosen to not use contingency funds to ensure payments during a shutdown. Therefore, SNAP benefits are at risk of being delayed or suspended beginning November 1, leaving low-income families without regular access to food. Combined with persistently high food prices, this is a particularly difficult time for families across the country, including here in Colorado and at South High School.

Programs like the Giving Grocery are more essential than ever. Please consider supporting your local food pantry and encouraging your friends to do the same.
