Jerry lost his valiant battle with pancreatic cancer on Saturday, September 6th. He had been diagnosed with advanced cancer in February.
Jerry was the very proud father of two sons, Eric who lives with his wife in New Jersey where they are employed in the medical services industry and Jacob, a Board-Certified anesthesiologist, and his wife who live in Vermont, being avid outdoor enthusiasts. At the time of his death, Jerry had been living with Jake for a few weeks, where his room had a lovely mountain view.
The two loves of his life were his grandsons in New Jersey, Thomas, 5 and Nate, 2. All you had to do was to ask Jerry how they were, and the next five minutes were totally devoted to him talking about the best role in his life as a doting grandfather. You could feel the love in his heart even over the phone.
Jerry is also survived by his sister in Michigan and two brothers in Cleveland and their families.
Of all of his many accomplishments, Jerry was most proud of his devotion to ensuring that Eric and Jake received the best possible education starting with high school at Xaverian in Massachusetts - I quote "the single best decision I ever made in my life. The education that they got there created a solid foundation that set them up for everything that followed."
Jerry grew up in Farmingdale, New York, and at a very early age developed his love for the game of golf. He could still break 80 even in his 70's. He claimed that he and his brothers used to sneak onto a little, public golf course near their home to play a few holes without getting caught. The course was located in Bethpage State Park, the site of Bethpage Black that is hosting this year's Rider Cup starting on 9/26.
Jerry entered the mortgage industry in the 70's and had a variety of roles, finally opening his own company - Mansfield Mortgage - in the 1980's. He claimed that well over 200 people in the industry started their careers with him and went on to achieve considerable success with other firms, in some cases, starting their own companies. Many remain active and key players in the regional mortgage economy. At the time of his death, he had just retired from Shoreham Bank.
Jerry was recognized many times for his significant contributions to the mortgage industry. Among the highlights:
- RIMBA Distinguished Service award - 2003 and 2006
- NEMBC Hall of Fame - 2017
- RIMBA Lifetime Achievement Award - 2018
- RIMBA President -1998 & 1999
- Founder/publisher of the paper version of the RIMBA Report
He retired from the RIMBA Board of Directors 11/18, and by unanimous vote was named Director Emeritus. He remained active on the Legislative Committee right up to the 2025 session of the General Assembly.
All of the above biographical material is easily sourced, but it only gives a faint glimpse of his place in the regional mortgage industry.
Jerry was a founding father of RIMBA in 1987. He was very active in the Massachusetts Association of Mortgage Bankers and Correspondent Lenders which ultimately became MMBA as well as the Massachusetts Mortgage Brokers Association which formed in the early 1990's. He also travelled to New Hampshire at the request of friends in the business to assist them to get their Association established.
He made countless appearances before all three state legislatures to discuss pending legislation that would have been detrimental to the members of all of those associations.
In short, he was a pioneer in this business and a passionate mortgage professional, who helped establish the foundation for the existence of RIMBA, MMBA, and NHMBBA as we know them today.
Jerry was a brother, father, grandfather, and a friend to many, and a very effective advocate for the business that he loved.
You will be missed.
Shalom, Rabbi.
