Why Networking Is Still One of the Best Business Investments You Can Make
One of my favorite parts of my job is getting out and meeting people.
Whether I'm welcoming a new business at a ribbon-cutting, grabbing coffee with a business owner, touring a manufacturing facility, or attending one of our networking events, I'm constantly reminded that the greatest asset any business has isn't found on a balance sheet. It's the relationships they build.
Over the past year, I've had the opportunity to meet with dozens of business owners, nonprofit leaders, educators, entrepreneurs, and community partners across Shawnee and Pottawatomie County. Every conversation is different, but one thing has become incredibly clear: the businesses that are connected to their community are often the businesses that continue to grow.
That's because opportunities rarely begin with a transaction. They begin with a relationship.
A new customer may come from someone you met at a networking event. A future employee may be introduced by another business owner. A partnership might develop from a conversation over coffee. Sometimes the connection you make today won't pay off tomorrow, but months or even years later you'll be grateful you took the time to introduce yourself.
In today's digital world, it's easy to believe that networking has been replaced by social media, email, or online advertising. While those tools certainly have their place, they can't replace the trust that's built through face-to-face conversations and genuine relationships. People still do business with people they know, like, and trust.
That belief is at the heart of what we're working to build at Shawnee Forward.
We're not simply planning events or hosting ribbon cuttings. We're creating opportunities for people to connect, collaborate, and strengthen the business community. Every Social Exchange, Learning opportunity, legislative forum, Leadership Shawnee session, ribbon cutting, and networking event is designed with one goal in mind: bringing people together.
When you attend one of our events, you're not just filling a seat. You're investing in your business. You're meeting potential customers, referral partners, community leaders, mentors, vendors, and future employees. Those conversations can lead to new business, fresh ideas, and lasting relationships that simply don't happen sitting behind a desk.
As Chamber Director, one of my goals is continuing to build a Chamber that serves as the front door to our business community. I want Shawnee Forward to be a place where businesses of every size feel welcomed, supported, and connected. Whether you've been in business for 30 years or you're just opening your doors, there is value in building relationships with the people who share your community.
So here's my challenge for you this week: At the next networking event you attend, introduce yourself to three people you've never met before. Don't lead with a sales pitch. Ask about their business. Learn their story. Look for ways you can help them before asking how they can help you. You may be surprised where that conversation leads.
And if you're reading this but aren't yet a member of Shawnee Forward, or your membership has lapsed, I'd love the opportunity to meet with you. Membership is about much more than attending events. It's about becoming part of a network of businesses and leaders who are invested in one another's success and in the future of our community.
Let's grab a cup of coffee, talk about your business, and explore how Shawnee Forward can help you build meaningful connections and grow your business. We'd be honored to welcome you into our business community because the strongest communities are built when businesses work together.
I hope to see you at an upcoming event.
