USTA Rules Q&A: What happens if a ball falls out of a playerโ€™s clothing during a point?

Q: During a point, a ball falls out of a playerโ€™s pocket or clothing. Is the point automatically replayed?๐Ÿง

A: No. The opponent must stop play immediately and claim a hindrance.

  • On the first occurrence involving that player, the dropped ball is considered an unintentional hindrance. A let is called, the point is replayed, and the player is advised that any additional item falling from their clothing or person may result in loss of the point.
  • On a subsequent occurrence involving that same player, it is treated as an intentional hindrance. If the opponent immediately stops play and claims the hindrance, the player who dropped the item loses the point.
  • If the opponent continues playing and does not immediately call a hindrance, play continues. The dropped ball becomes part of the court for that point.
  • A player may not stop play and claim a let for a ball falling from their own clothing.

This rule applies not only to tennis balls, but also to hats, towels, jewelry, watches, or other items worn or carried by a player.

33. Claiming a hindrance. A player who claims a hindrance must stop play as soon as possible.
