The Modoc was alive with wildlife!
On the surface, the Modoc land looks like a dry and quiet chapparal.
But if you stop and be quiet and look closely, you'll find it is teeming with life.
The Earth has regenerated herself in a blanket of green after the Antelope Fire of August 2021. I woke up in the morning and fell asleep in the evening
to the sweet call of Meadowlarks, Quail, and Mourning Doves.
Just for fun, here is a list of this year's Modoc wildlife inventory:
Bald Eagles, Meadowlarks, Valley Quail, Mourning Doves, Orioles,
Great Horned Owl, Barn Owl, Flycatchers, Ring-necked pheasants,
and many other birds too numerous to count!
Black Widow Spider, Lizards, Deer, Pronghorn Antelope, Jack Rabbits,
Ground Squirrels, Mouse (one night in my gear bag!), Mother Coyote and her Pup, Cougar poop (but no actual cougar sighting -- whew!).
"The clearest way into the Universe is through a forest wilderness.
When one tugs at a single thing in nature, he finds it attached to the
rest of the world." -- John Muir
