The Plants Around Us

We have had so much fun this past month learning about the plants around us!

Below are some topics to talk about with your child:

  • Are plants alive? How do you know? Yes! They need air and water to live and grow.

  • Name some types of plants: trees, shrubs, grass, herbs, vines

  • What do the roots do? They hold the plant in place and soak up water and nutrients from the soil.

  • What does the stem do? It supports the parts of the plant above the ground. It has tiny tubes that carry water and nutrients to the rest of the plant.

  • What do the leaves do? They make food for the plant and take in carbon dioxide through the openings in the leaves.

  • What makes leaves green? chlorophyll

  • What is it called when plants make their own food? photosynthesis

  • What is the purpose of a flower? It makes seeds.

The Magic of Montessori

We are so lucky to have our students for three (and sometimes four) years! As I was compiling binders for tomorrow's conferences, I was once again reminded just how transformative the kindergarten year is in Montessori. By that time, children have been reading independently for quite a while and are ready to make the transition from learning to read to reading to learn.

All the art from their younger years begins to shine through as fine motor skills blossom into beautiful handwriting and detailed illustrations. There is also a remarkable mathematical explosion—it’s not uncommon for our five-year-olds to master their addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts, read clocks, count money, and even explore fractions.

As always, thank you for entrusting us with your child and believing in the Montessori method. We hope your child's love for learning will last a lifetime.
