|
|
 |
|
 |
The State Bar of New Mexico invites members to participate in a membership survey. We’ll use responses to help guide programming and services in the coming years. To maximize the survey's impact, we need to hear from at least 1400 members of the State Bar. Please help us help the profession and your legal community by setting aside 7-11 minutes to take the survey! The survey is available through Friday, April 15. Questions or comments? Please email Member Services at memberservices@sbnm.org or call at 505-797-6039.

Ask-A-Lawyer Call-in Program will be on April 30
In the spirit of Law Day, volunteer attorneys gather on the Saturday closest to May 1 in regions across New Mexico to answer brief calls from the public on a wide range of civil legal issues. The Ask-a-Lawyer Call-in Program yields approximately 300 calls each year. The spring event is scheduled for Saturday, April 30, 2022. Attorneys - please consider volunteering! We are asking for limited in-person volunteer participation at the Sate Bar Center or telephonic participation throughout the state. Volunteers in Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Las Cruces and Farmington will be most needed. We will host up to 10 volunteers at the State Bar Center in Albuquerque. An additional 30 volunteers will be needed to participate remotely via call forwarding.

Board of Bar Commissioners Appointments
ABA House of Delegates
Pursuant to the American Bar Association Constitution and Bylaws (Rules of the Procedure House of Delegates) Article 6, Section 6.4, the Board of Bar Commissioners will make one appointment to the American Bar Association (ABA) House of Delegates for a two-year term, which will expire at the conclusion of the 2024 ABA Annual Meeting. The delegate must be a licensed New Mexico attorney and a current ABA member in good standing and be willing to attend meetings or otherwise complete his/her term and responsibilities without reimbursement or compensation from the State Bar. However, the ABA provides reimbursement for expenses to attend the ABA mid-year meetings. Members wishing to serve on the House of Delegates should send a letter of interest and brief resume by May 6 to bbc@sbnm.org.
Civil Legal Services Commission
Pursuant to NMSA 1978, § 34-14-1 (2001), the Board of Bar Commissioners will make one appointment to the Civil Legal Services Commission for a three-year term. Applicants must be licensed to practice law in New Mexico and must have experience with civil legal matters affecting low-income persons. Attorneys who wish to apply to serve on the commission should send a letter of interest and brief resume by May 6 to bbc@sbnm.org.
Judicial Standards Commission
Pursuant to NMSA 1978, § 34-10-1(B) (1999), the Board of Bar Commissioners will make one appointment to the Judicial Standards Commission for a four-year term. Applicants must be licensed to practice law in New Mexico. The time commitment for service on this Commission is substantial and the workload is voluminous. Receiving, reviewing and analyzing substantial quantities of electronic documents are necessary to prepare for Commission matters. Strict adherence to constitutional, statutory and regulatory authority governing the Commission is mandatory, expressly including but not limited to confidentiality. Commissioners meet at least six (6) times per year for approximately three hours per meeting. A substantial amount of reading and preparation is required for every meeting. In addition to regular meetings, the Commission schedules at least three weeklong trailing dockets of trials. Additional trials, hearings or other events may be scheduled on special settings. Additionally, mandatory in-house training sessions may periodically take place. Unless properly recused or excused from a matter, all Commissioners are required to faithfully attend all meetings and participate in all trials and hearings. Appointees should come to the Commission with limited conflicts of interest and must continually avoid, limit or eliminate conflicts of interest with the Commission's cases, Commission members, Commission staff and all others involved in Commission matters. Attorneys who wish to serve on the Commission should send a letter of interest and brief resume by May 6 to bbc@sbnm.org.

Supreme Court Phasing in Prevention and Diversion Program
The New Mexico Supreme Court will phase in an Eviction Prevention and Diversion Program statewide starting in April and in stages lift a moratorium on evictions of people unable to pay their rent during the COVID-19 pandemic. The program helps tenants access money available through the state Department of Finance and Administration for unpaid rent and utilities, temporary housing at a motel or hotel, and the initial costs of moving into new permanent housing. The court-based program also provides trained facilitators to assist landlords and tenants in negotiating a possible settlement of their rental disputes. Due to an order issued March 16 by the Court, here is the schedule for phasing in the Eviction Prevention and Diversion Program in judicial districts across the state and lifting a stay on evictions for non-payment of rent:
- Starting April 1 in the Second (Bernalillo County), Fifth (Chaves, Eddy and Lea counties), Tenth (DeBaca, Harding and Quay counties) and Twelfth (Lincoln and Otero counties) Judicial Districts.
- Effective May 1 in the Third (Doña Ana County), Sixth (Grant, Hidalgo and Luna counties) and Seventh (Catron, Sierra, Socorro and Torrance counties) Judicial Districts.
- Starting June 1 in the First (Los Alamos, Rio Arriba and Santa Fe counties), Fourth (Mora, Guadalupe and San Miguel counties) and Eighth (Colfax, Taos and Union counties) Judicial Districts.
- Effective July 1 in the Eleventh (McKinley and San Juan counties) and Thirteen (Cibola, Sandoval and Valencia counties) Judicial Districts.
