Week of February 11-15, 2019
Dear Southern Door Community,
It seems that every day this year brings new challenges we have never faced before with Mother Nature and Old Man Winter. We continue to monitor the forecast and do our best to give a timely announcement that allows parents to plan. Cold is pretty definite as a call, snow can sometimes be navigated, but freezing rain and ice are downright dangerous. While Thursday's weather arrived later than expected, we just could not chance having students and staff at school and then having unsafe conditions going home. At this time, we have enough instructional minutes in our calendar that we will not need to make up any of the days but then again, we know that winter is not over! Thanks to everyone for your patience as we continue to navigate being a part of Wisconsin winters and keeping everyone safe.

The wintry weather has had many districts coming up with creative ways to engage kids at home and also to have a little fun. Many staff and residents were either emailing or "tagging" us wondering when SD would do a video. Well, we did now it has gone viral. A special thanks to classroom teacher, Jessica Meacham, for filming and to elementary principal, Cory Vandertie, for being our star performer! Click on this link to access one of the local TV station's coverage of the SD snow video. We are Eagle Strong and Eagle Proud!

Class of 2019 Valedictorian
Alexis Wery, daughter of Ryan and Jodi Wery, is Southern Door High School’s Valedictorian. During her time at Southern Door, she enjoyed participating in Southern Door athletics, specifically softball. Alexis has been on the high honor roll every
semester throughout high school. She also participated in the statewide Youth in Government program. Alexis has been a member of the Math Team all four years of high school and was the team co-captain this year. Her most memorable experience in high school has been attending Badgers Girls State.

Outside of school, Alexis actively volunteers in her community through numerous organizations where she has developed a passion for helping others. Additionally, her participation in her local 4-H club has allowed her to engage in her favorite hobby of raising animals to show at the Door Country Fair.

Though she is still undecided as to where she will be attending college, the lineage of cancer in her family has inspired Alexis to major in genetics. She intends to conduct cancer research with a degree in pathology.
Class or 2019 Salutatorian
Regan Norton, daughter of Jason and Marissa Norton, is Southern Door High School’s Salutatorian. Throughout high school, Regan participated in volleyball and softball all four years, and basketball for three. She is a member of Big Brothers Big Sisters and SHIELD. Regan has participated in Youth in Government for three years, where she holds the state position of First Justice. She is also president of the National Honor Society. Regan was chosen as Southern Door’s Badger Girls State Representative her junior year and has been on high honor roll every semester.

Outside of school, Regan is active in her community through her involvement with 4-H, and she serves on a teen council for Write On Door County. She also works at Bluefront Cafe. She is undecided as to which university she will attend, but plans to study Political Science and Spanish.
Keeping Families Safe on the Internet
Keeping families and children safe on the internet is a big priority for the parents of Door County and the State of Wisconsin. The Wisconsin Department of Justice's Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force and the Department of Public Instruction launched an interactive, online program called “Interact!” that parents can work through with their children. The 30-minute program provides parents with the opportunity to review their own tech use to set a good online example; interactive activities to complete alongside their children; and follow-up resources and activities to keep the discussions going. Be your child’s trusted adult. Interact can be found at this link .
Access to the Recording of the SD Board of Education Candidate Forum

Monday night’s forum featured the five candidates vying for two seats on the SD Board of Education: Milly Gonzales; Penny L. Price; George Sincock; Matthew Tassoul; and Adam Urban. The primary election is Tuesday, February 19. Click on this link to access a recording of the forum. We thank these candidates for their willingness to serve the community and our district in this vital position.
Sixth Graders Experience Writer Residency
A special thank you to Write On, Door County for sponsoring Write On resident Liza Wiemer. She spent the week of January 21 st working with sixth grade students at Southern Door. Approximately 80 students gathered each morning to learn about the craft of writing and to share a story about an act of kindness. See a story about the SD experience from her perspective at this link.
