What this means for the rest of us
Hospitals have used hyperbaric oxygen for hard-to-heal wounds for years. You breathe pure oxygen under pressure, which pushes far more oxygen into your blood and tissue. Healing tissue needs oxygen, and damaged areas often can't get enough of it.
Now think about the rest of your body. Your brain, your heart and your muscles run on the same things as that leg: blood, tissue and oxygen. If this is what hyperbaric can do for one part of the body, think what it could mean for the rest of you.
The research is exciting. In one small study from Israel's Shamir Medical Center and Tel Aviv University, 35 healthy adults over 64 completed 60 hyperbaric sessions. Telomeres in their blood cells lengthened by 20% to 38%, and senescent immune cells, the worn-out cells that stop working properly, dropped by as much as 37%. Read the study
The same team also ran a randomized trial in 63 healthy older adults. They found better attention, processing speed and executive function, along with more blood flow to key areas of the brain. Read the trial
Even Bryan Johnson, who may be the most measured man in longevity, calls hyperbaric “one of the highest value health therapies I've done.” He had already spent years pushing his biomarkers to elite levels and was struggling to find anything new that moved them. After 60 sessions, he reported systemic inflammation below detection limits and a 28.6% drop in pTau217, a marker tied to dementia.
