Help protect people, pets, and wildlife during your Fourth of July celebrations! Leave fireworks to the experts and avoid setting them off on the beach or in your neighborhood. The loud noises, bright lights, and debris from fireworks can harm wildlife in Florida. Birds on the shore can get confused and abandon their nests, leaving their chicks vulnerable. The leftover debris from fireworks can look like food to sea turtles and young birds, who mistakenly eat the bits of plastic. Let's celebrate our nation’s independence in a way that keeps Tampa Bay safe for wildlife.

Seagrass Transect Training

Despite the threat of severe weather, we successfully held our seagrass transect training last month! Scientists from the Southwest Florida Seagrass Working Group gathered to identify species, measure blade lengths, and estimate seagrass abundance. Over the summer, these teams will document seagrass diversity and density at 62 locations around the bay. This data will be used to create a comprehensive picture of seagrass health in Tampa Bay.

Seagrass is a crucial habitat for fish and other marine animals. It stabilizes sediment, produces oxygen, and reduces shoreline erosion. The amount and condition of seagrass is a key indicator of ecosystem health in Tampa Bay.

Give-A-Day for the Bay: Duette Preserve

Over 80 people volunteered to plant 17,200 wiregrass plugs in Duette Preserve!

Manatee County had an ambitious plan: get rid of the non-native plants that had taken over the entrance to Duette Preserve. To prepare, staff conducted a prescribed burn and harvested a native seed mix from elsewhere on the property. Then, volunteers installed the wiregrass plugs to reestablish native ground cover. With regular summer storms giving the plants a good drink, the wiregrasses we planted should lay down roots in a matter of weeks!

Not only does this project beautify the entrance to Duette Preserve, it also provides habitat for local wildlife. Bobwhite quail and Osceola turkeys will make nests in the grass. Kestrels will feed on insects attracted by the rich food source. Gopher tortoises will create burrows. Wiregrass also helps carry fire across the landscape, which is essential to this ecosystem. These beneficial fires remove debris and non-native species, return nutrients to the landscape, and encourage native wildflowers to produce seeds.

A huge thank you to everyone (special shout out to Oyster River Ecology) that came out to help with this planting! Projects like this one are important to restore healthy ecosystems and provide biodiversity. Stay tuned for future updates.

Hillsborough River Sampling

TBEP staffer Kerry Flaherty Walia joined the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission (FWC) for a recent sampling trip on the Hillsborough River. There, researchers observed juvenile red drum, spotted seatrout, common snook, largemouth bass, and even bull sharks! Several invasive species, including Mayan cichlid and armored catfish, were also spotted.

FWC has monitored fish populations in three of Tampa Bay's four major river systems since 1998. However, the Hillsborough River has not been monitored since 2012. Starting this year, TBEP is providing funding to fill this sampling gap. Because fish use tidal rivers as nursery habitats, scientists can track fish populations in rivers that flow into the bay to help predict the future health of adult fish populations. Researchers will use data collected to complement the existing Tampa Bay Nekton Index.

Adopt-A-Drain

Not ready to commit to a puppy? Adopt a storm drain instead! You can help your local waterways stay clean by adopting a storm drain in your neighborhood. Keep it free of trash and yard waste and spread the word on the importance of “Only Rain Down the Drain.”
