Grateful for Our DKG Sisterhood

Gratitude means appreciating what matters and recognizing those who have touched our lives. The word GRATEFUL reflects our DKG Sisterhood and the difference we make together. DKG members are part of a community of women educators who value learning, leadership, service, and friendship.

G — Generosity

Generosity is at the heart of education. Every educator knows what it means to give beyond the job description. We give our time, creativity, patience, encouragement, and often a piece of our hearts. At DKG, generosity takes on another dimension. We share our wisdom, support one another, and offer our talents to strengthen the DKG community. We recognize that what we have received is meant to be shared.

R — Relationships

At the heart of DKG are relationships. Long after meetings end and programs conclude, the friendships we have formed and the lives we have touched endure. Our Sisterhood reminds us that we do not travel life’s journey alone. We belong to a community of women who celebrate our joys, understand our challenges, and encourage us to become our best selves. We are known, valued, and appreciated.

A — Appreciation

Gratitude deepens when we take time to notice. Appreciation helps us notice the goodness all around us, especially the things we sometimes take for granted, including our Sisterhood. We’re grateful to the women who came before us, whose vision and dedication laid the foundation we stand on today. We also recognize those who lead today, often quietly and without recognition, as well as the younger educators whose fresh energy and creativity inspire our hope for the future.

T — Transformation

At its heart, education transforms lives. It opens doors, challenges assumptions, and creates opportunities once thought out of reach. As educators, we’ve been fortunate to witness these special moments in our students. Our DKG Sisterhood inspires us to keep growing and to participate in relevant programs of action. Through ongoing professional and personal development, leadership opportunities, and shared experiences, we see that transformation continues throughout our lives.

E — Encouragement

Sometimes the most important gift we can give another person is encouragement. A simple word of affirmation can restore confidence. A listening ear can ease a burden. A thoughtful gesture can remind someone that their efforts matter. At DKG, we have countless opportunities to encourage one another, especially women who are starting their careers, stepping into new leadership roles, or navigating life’s transitions. We may never fully know how much our encouragement matters.

F — Friendship

Friendship is one of the treasures of belonging to DKG. What begins as a professional connection often deepens into a lasting bond. Across generations, communities, and educational experiences, we find common values and shared hopes. Friendship reminds us that life is richer when shared. It gives us reasons to laugh, opportunities to learn, and companions who walk with us through the seasons. Our friendships are not merely a benefit of membership. They are part of the very spirit of Sisterhood that keeps our organization vibrant.

U — Unity

Unity doesn’t mean we all think alike or see the world through the same lens. Instead, it encourages us to appreciate the strength our differences bring and the shared purpose that unites us. At DKG, we represent many generations, experiences, communities, and perspectives. What unites us is our commitment to excellence in education, advancing women, and the belief that every person has gifts worth nurturing. When we work together, our individual contributions combine to create something greater than any of us could achieve alone.

L — Legacy

Every educator leaves a meaningful legacy. We may see it in former students' achievements or in the programs we’ve helped create. More often, though, it lives on quietly—in the confidence we’ve inspired, the kindness we’ve shown, and the possibilities we’ve helped others discover.

DKG’s legacy lives not only in its history and accomplishments but also in the countless lives touched by women who believed that education could make a difference. The question before us is not only what legacy we’ve inherited but also what we’re creating for those who will follow.

A Grateful Heart Looks Forward

As we reflect, we’re reminded that gratitude isn’t only about looking back—it’s also about looking forward. We can be thankful for all we've accomplished while staying open to what’s ahead. We can cherish our traditions and welcome fresh ideas. We can celebrate the women who have shaped our organization and encourage those who will carry its mission forward. Ultimately, a grateful heart doesn’t just remember its blessings—it shares them with others.

Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow. - Melody Beattie

Beta Chi Chapter members enjoyed a special presentation on the monarch butterfly by author Rayna Lambert, who shared both her extensive knowledge and her new book. The evening was particularly meaningful as Rayna dedicated the book to our Past President, Mary Bumstead. Mary first inspired Rayna’s passion for butterflies when Rayna was just a child, bringing this beautiful journey full circle!

Membership Matters

When you invite an educator into your chapter, you are empowering that person to enjoy the benefits of your chapter, Ohio State Organization, and the Society. Provide her with the knowledge of those benefits, help her obtain those benefits - that’s what friends and colleagues do - and celebrate with her and your chapter when she realizes those benefits.

When you create a difference in someone’s life, you not only impact that life, you impact everyone influenced by her throughout her entire life. That’s the ripple effect: ripples grow, expand, and inspire. Now, go make waves!
