SLYC GOLF TOURNAMENT SPONSORSHIP

Our annual Golf Tournament, taking place on Tuesday, August 8 at Wildfire Golf Club, is SOLD OUT! Thanks to all who registered for your incredible enthusiasm around this event!

Happily, there's another way you can still participate in this year's tourney and make an impact, as this event is our main fundraiser — you can become a sponsor!

Feel free to use this online form to secure your sponsorship https://forms.gle/RYZuNcHgkLfug6nU6 or contact Bethany Chittick at slycinfo@gmail.com or by phone (705) 772-6716 anytime between 8am-4pm on weekdays.

You are welcome to do a sponsorship through your business if that's more efficient for you. Bethany can guide you as needed but the form is similar to ones you used in previous years.

Here’s a look at our sponsorship tiers (signage is optional):

  • Bronze ($500 or more): Signage for your family or business placed at a hole at Wildfire
  • Silver ($1,000 or more): Large signage placed at the front of the Wildfire Clubhouse and beside Court 1 on Juniper Island
  • Gold ($2,500 or more): Large logo signage placed at the front of the tournament and on Juniper Island, as well as generous acknowledgement in the SLYC newsletter

Thank you for your support!

JUNIOR SAILING UPDATE

We may have wrapped up our first month of sailing, but there’s plenty of fun still ahead for our Junior Sailors!

The annual Junior Sailing Banquet was held last week and the sailors had a blast with games, skits, songs and more. The pictures below speak for themselves, but it’s safe to say that plenty of fun was had by all.

Put those hands in the air if you're having a good time at the Junior Sailing Banquet!

Our Race Team will soon be packing up boats, gear and more and heading to Kingston for CORK 2023 (August 7-11). SLYC will have six 420s and a laser competing for the Canadian Youth Championships.

The team has been training hard for the big regatta and they were lucky enough to have two-time Olympian, SailGP racer and Stony Laker Tom Ramshaw stop by for Masters Monday to give them some tips on going fast and loving the sport of sailing.

Meanwhile, our Opti Race Team is heading to Lake of Bays for a one-day, Optimist-only regatta. Good luck to Maggie Hertz, Quinn Calder and Lucas Dipasquale.

NOTE: Our second and final Junior Sailing Banquet will be held on Thursday, August 10. Stay tuned for more details!

And there are still plenty of spots open for August sailing, so please sign up if you want to get in on the fun!

Thanks and Happy Sailing.

WEEKEND RACING

A little rain did not dampen the spirits of the keen sailors competing for the Ryder Cups in three classes on Saturday, July 29. Class winners included Atticus and Toby Kimsa in the fleet (420), Sy Walsworth in the Laser Radial, and Scott Walsworth and Kevin Kimsa in the Flying Scot.

The Cruising Race from Juniper to Big Island and back took place on Sunday, July 30. Dave Anderson, Doug Smith and Tam Matthews led the fleet up the main channel past the Church, with Tam taking the Cruising Race trophy at the end.

This Holiday weekend will feature the Annual Laser, 420 and Fleet Race Day on Saturday, August 5 at 1pm, with three short races. The beautiful Brooks-Hill Trophy will be awarded to the Sunday, August 6 race winner.

The Annual Catboat Regatta takes place August 12-13, with 11am starts. These beautifully restored wooden boats, built in the 1920s, continue to produce exciting racing. And boats are available to race! Please contact Gord Welsh or Tam Matthews if you wish to participate.

See you on the race course!

TENNIS UPDATE

Tennis Tournament Update

Congratulations to Alex Brooks-Hill and Janet Wells, who won the Women's Doubles trophy over the weekend after a hard-fought and entertaining match against Jody Dembroski and Jennifer Elliott.

Please join us at the courts this Sunday, August 6 to show your support for the rest of our talented competitors as they vie for the remaining tournament titles! Here's the schedule:

  • 11am-1pm: Men's Singles
  • 12-2pm: Women's Singles
  • 1-3pm: Mixed Doubles
  • 2-4pm: Men's Doubles

A huge thank you to Chloe Paradine for working tirelessly to make this tournament a success!

Mixed Clinics with Off-Lake Pro

We're delighted to confirm that we'll be running a series of mixed clinics with tennis pro Kooros Ghasemi on Saturday, August 12, from 12-4pm. Mark your calendars!

Kooros is the Head Pro at Gwendolyn Park Tennis Club in Toronto, and for those of you who participated in his clinics here last year, you know this guy is an ace when it comes to running fun and challenging sessions.

Exciting Pickleball News

Starting Tuesday, August 8, we'll be re-introducing Adult Pickleball clinics at 9am, followed by a Free Round Robin at 10am.

These clinics will be run by our junior pro staff, who have been trained on how to lead a clinic focused on the key aspects of the game and how to improve your pickleball knowledge and skills.

A big thank you to Dave Ramsay, who has helped train our staff to be able to offer high-quality, one-hour pickleball clinics to further develop your understanding and progress of this relatively new sport.

Following this clinic, we'll be offering a Free Round Robin time slot where members can sign up to play other members in a friendly competitive environment. The round robin will consist of playing short games with one other player against teams formed during the hour.

If you have any further questions about our tennis or pickleball programs or events, please reach out to Bethany or our Head Pros, Steven Wells and Aidan Quennec, at slycinfo@gmail.com or 705-772-6716.

See you on the courts!

PROPS TO THE PROPERTY VOLUNTEERS!

The next time you're around the Clubhouse and Court 1, you'll notice a new line of "bearberry" shrubs along the retaining wall. They are native to Ontario, can withstand temperatures of -40C and are fine in dry weather. The red berries are edible and the leaves are used in herbal medicine.

Many thanks to George Durno and Jackson Pitfield for volunteering their time, skills and good-natured teamwork to do the installation.
