Message from Dr. Ham

Dear Plavan Families,

October is a month to remember at Plavan Elementary School. Here are some of the highlights:

October 24 & 25th: 5th Grade Science Camp. Special thanks to Mrs. Betty Fung for serving as Chair to help coordinate this year's trips.

*For our current 4th grade parents, we need your support & feedback! Please email Dr. Ham and Mrs. Kelly Rutter (5th grade lead): hamp@fvsd.us & rutterk@fvsd.us if you can help coordinate and support with fundraising for next year's Science Camp. We are looking for four 4th grade parents. Planning for next year's event starts now. Please email before Winter Break if you are able to support.

October 24th-28th: Plavan celebrated Red Ribbon Week making a pledge to make good choices. The highlight of the week was the PTO sponsored BMX action packed assembly!!! The message of making healthy choices was as memorable as the aerial action and thrilling stunts on display!!!

October 28th: Plavan PTO held our 6th Annual Trunk or Treat Event. Thank you Minerva Rosas and Lindsey Reames for leading this terrific community event!!!

October 28th: Orange County Teacher of the Year Ceremony was held at the Disneyland hotel. Our very own, Ms. Jill Summerhays (SDC Preschool) was honored as Orange County's Teacher of the Year for 2022-2023!!!

October 31st: Our annual Halloween Parade was held on the shady blacktops of our basketball courts this year. Plavan parents, students, and staff in attendance had a blast!!!

As we enter the holiday season, I am reminded that there are so much to be thankful for! At Plavan, I am very thankful for the completion of Phase I of modernization!!!

On November 21st: Phase I classrooms - Mrs. Manthorne TK; Ms. Benson, Hughes, and Wilson 4th grades; Mrs. Spenser/Burza 3rd grade; Ms. Summerhays preschool; and Mrs. DeJulio/Querry 1st grade will return to their newly remodeled classrooms. The Media Center, Library, Stage, Front Office, and our Conference rooms are remodeled and ready for our students and staff to enjoy!!!

On December 9th, our biggest PTO event and fundraiser, the PLAVAN JOGATHON will held after its successful return last year!

PTO hosted the Jogathon Kickoff Assembly this week. PTO VP-Mr. Steven Nguyen had our entire student body on the edge of their seats during the kickoff assembly!

Our school goal is to reach $35,000. Jogathon supports the Arts, assemblies, field trips, classroom enhancement and supplies. JAT packets were sent home this Thursday! Thank you Plavan community for your support!!!

Finally, parents, we need your help to promote safety on our campus.

Please check in at the front office first if you are volunteering or visiting our campus. We ask all adults to wear a Staff ID or a Visitor Badge.

FVPD wanted us to remind our families to be vigilant and watchful. Help actively support the safety of our campus by calling FVPD (either 9-1-1 or non-emergency dispatch at 714-593-4485), if you observe any suspicious activity. You can also use the anonymous WeTip line.

Congratulations! We are proud to award the following students with the prestigious Proud Panther Award for this month of November! You have much to be proud of—as do your teachers and your parents! What a fabulous job you are doing here at Plavan School!

You are a shining example of of our school motto: ROARing to success. You are being respectful to your teachers, staff, and friends. You are On-task, Always being safe, and Responsible with the assignments and expectations at school.

At Plavan, the Proud Panther Award will include the praise, respect, and recognition of having your name read during the Friday Flag Ceremony and of having it appear in our monthly newsletter. Furthermore, you get to be first for breakfast and lunch by showing your Proud Panther Name Badge.

We hope your family will also share with you how proud of you they must be! You have so much to do on a daily basis to make your way successfully through this world. Not only are you doing it well, but you are making a difference to all those around you. We very proud of you and so pleased that you are a part of Plavan Elementary School. It is an honor to provide you with a day of “special” recognition. As you grow through the years, you will attend many schools—all of whom will have different mascots. However, you will ALWAYS be a member of Plavan’s community of Proud Panthers!

Site Lead: Diane Traw- Our instructional coach who helps build the "Best First Instructional practices" in our classrooms.

Resource Specialist/504/SST Coordinator: Jessica Craig- Educational Specialist who helps our staff and students with intervention and accommodations in the classroom.

Front Office Reminders:

We just wanted to send a shout out to all of our families for their continued support of our staff and for all you do for us all year. We really appreciate the parents, grandparents, guardians and others that make Plavan an amazing community!

We also want to thank all of our students that have perfect attendance (zero tardies, zero late pick ups and zero abensences) so far this year. We appreciate you so much! We know that it's not easy and it takes the whole family to make that happen!

When students arrive on time, after a good night's rest, good breakfast, and ready to learn, studies show they do better overall in the classroom environment, feel more connected to their peers and are more successful academically. It also avoids the anxiety students sometimes feel when they enter the room when it's in full swing and the whole room stops to look at them enter.

Some helpful suggestions to try to be on time are:

1) Get as much ready as you can in the evening before bedtime.

2) Pack backpacks with homework, Chromebooks, water bottles and non perishable snacks.

3) Put clothes, shoes, socks, jackets out so it's easy to get ready in the morning.

4) If you still run late, try starting your morning 5-10 minutes earlier each day. Try a timer to create a sense of urgency in your child/children.

5) Teach students how to unpack/pack backpacks or buckets, help with lunch packing, tying shoes, getting dressed by themselves, putting on jackets, getting in and out of the car by themselves with their belongings, to make mornings and drop off go more smoothly.

Lastly, if there is anything we can do to support your family in helping you get here on time, please let us know. We know a lot of families are on a transfer and may be commuting a distance
