LabCoP Extended ECHO Session

on 6 August!

Join us on Thursday, 6 August 2026, from 4:00 PM to 5:30 PM EAT for a LabCoP Extended Session exploring the impact of the GIS Laboratory Mapping (LabMap) programme across Africa.

Launched in 2018 by ASLM in partnership with Africa CDC, LabMap now supports 29 countries and has mapped over 5,558 laboratories across human, animal, and environmental health sectors. Building on this momentum, the programme aims to expand coverage to 42 countries by 2029. LabMap provides a standardized, GIS-based approach to assess capacity and network performance, enabling data-driven decision-making. Guided by the integrated One Health survey tool, it captures GIS-linked facility data on equipment, biosafety, quality management systems (QMS), workforce, infrastructure, diagnostics, and surveillance and collects intelligence on all IHR priority diseases and national high-burden diseases, enabling countries to identify gaps, optimize laboratory networks, and strengthen preparedness and response.

The WHO Joint External Evaluation (JEE) highlights the importance of strong laboratory systems for global health security. LabMap complements this by generating granular, GIS-linked data from individual laboratory facilities, enabling precise targeting of interventions and strengthening disease surveillance through actionable intelligence.

This session will showcase how GIS laboratory mapping is advancing One Health and strengthening laboratory systems across Africa. Africa CDC, Mozambique, SightSavers and UKHSA will share key One Health milestones, macro and micro network optimisation, and insights on chemical detection capacities, while Sightsavers will highlight its work to utilise existing LabMap datasets to identify laboratories with current and potential capacity to test for 5 Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs), trialling an approach that boasts One Health applications.

Presenters:

  • Dr Yao Selom Atrah, Laboratory Systems and Networks Programme Lead, Africa CDC, Ethiopia
  • Dr Felix Pinto, Head of Diagnostic Support Services, Ministry of Health, Mozambique
