African-American/Africana/Black Studies

African American Studies examines the experience of people of African descent in the United States and the Black diaspora, both throughout history and now. Unbound by but indebted to critical methodologies from disciplines like English, history, sociology, law, and political science, African American Studies centers on black people. It examines social, legal, and economic structures and our fundamental understanding of concepts like space, place, human, belonging, and community.

Asian Studies

If you are interested in the cultural and historical traditions of Asian countries, you may want to consider earning a degree in Asian studies. Courses in this discipline prepare you for a variety of interesting careers domestically and abroad. Learning more about this program and some potential careers that it could prepare you for can help you decide if an Asian studies degree is right for you.

Latin American/Latinx/Caribbean Studies

Latino studies is an academic discipline that studies the experience of people of Latin American ancestry in the United States. Closely related to other ethnic studies disciplines such as African-American studies, Asian American studies, and Native-American studies, Latino studies critically examines the history, culture, politics, issues, sociology, spirituality (Indigenous), and experiences of Latino people.

Middle Eastern Studies

This major prepares students to recognize, articulate, and analyze issues of the Middle East and North Africa communities and their diasporas in terms of their controlling interests, power structures, and justice. The U.S. Department of State considers Arabic one of the world's "critical languages," and the number of U.S. job ads listing Arabic as a desired skill increased by 150% between 2015 and 2017 alone.

Native American/Indigenous Studies

With a degree in Native American Studies, you can pursue a career in a variety of fields, including education and academia, government and law, nonprofit and advocacy, business and community development, healthcare and science, social work, the arts, and many more areas. A minor, certificate, or concentration in Native American Studies enhances your ability to think in non-traditional, non-Western ways and interact more effectively with diverse people.

The Scholarship Fund of Alexandria,

a 501(c)(3) organization, was established in 1986 by concerned citizens to help academically qualified students with financial need from Alexandria City Public Schools afford postsecondary education.


Through its relationship with the community, the mission of the Scholarship Fund is to encourage and assist the students of Alexandria City Public Schools by providing them with necessary resources to access and complete a college, vocational or career program of postsecondary education.

NOVA CORE SCHOLARSHIP

Sponsor: Northern Virginia Community College Engineering Department

Amount: Full-tuition scholarship $6,000 renewable for two years

Closing Date: beginning of each semester

Description: NOVA CORE will provide full-tuition scholarships for up to two years for up to 40 students annually over the next five years. This significant opportunity is especially geared toward under-represented students in the engineering field - minorities, women, first-generation college students, and veterans. These grant-funded scholarships will allow participants to focus on their studies full-time while developing the valuable skills needed to complete their degrees NOVA and transfer to four-year institutions.

Description: 4-year, full-ride scholarship connecting high-achieving low-income high school seniors with Questbridge partner colleges; some partner colleges are open to undocumented students.


Coca-Cola Scholars Program 

Sponsor: Coca-Cola

Closing Date: September 30, 2024

Amount: $20,000

Description: The Coca-Cola Scholars Program scholarship is an achievement-based scholarship awarded to students in their final year of high school. Students are recognized for their capacity to lead and serve, and their commitment to impacting their schools and communities.

Jack Kent Cooke Foundation College Scholarship

Sponsor: Jack Kent Cooke Foundation

Amount: Varies up to $55,000

Closing Date: November 16, 2024

Description: Each award intends to cover a significant share of the student’s educational experience – including tuition, living expenses, books, and required fees. Awards vary by individual, based on the cost of tuition as well as other grants or scholarships they may receive. This highly competitive scholarship includes:

  • Up to $55,000 per year to attend a four-year accredited undergraduate school.
  • Ability to pursue any area of study.
  • Personal advising about selecting a college and navigating financial aid.

Description: Scholarship is open to incoming and current college students who will

be pursuing a degree related to supply chain and operations management, inventory

control, materials management, or procurement.



Lewis Latimer Scholarship

Deadline: September 5, 2024

Amount: Up to $2,500

Description: This scholarship is for incoming and current undergraduate students who are pursuing a degree in a STEAM field at any four-year college/university during the 2024-25 school year. Applicants must be US citizens or lawful permanent residents. The application requires an essay and unofficial transcript.


Pizza Hut Foundation Scholarships

Sponsor: Pizza Hut Foundation

Amount: Up to $2,000

Closing Date: September 3, 2024

Description: Scholarship is open to students enrolled in or on track to apply to an accredited post-high school higher education program (including accredited two-and four-year colleges, universities, vocational-technical and trade schools).


Home Depot Scholarship Program

Sponsor: Home Depot

Deadline: September 9, 2024

Amount: $2,500

Description: This scholarship is for students enrolled full-time at any HBCU for the 2024-25 school year. Preference will be given to students who are pursuing a degree program in construction management or technology. The application requires a personal statement, transcript, and the FAFSA.


Love Your Career Scholarship 

Sponsor: Jones T-Shirts

Amount: $1,000

Closing Date: September 10, 2024

Description: $1,000 scholarship open to current college students attending college in one of the 50 U.S. states at the time of the application deadline. Applicant must submit an essay describing at least three steps that they plan to take in the next year to start a path toward having a career that they love. Applicants must also interview a professional in their intended field of study and include the interviewee’s answers in their essay.


Gates Scholarship

want to start their own online business. Applicant must share all the reasons they are scared to start their business and who their female boss role model is.


AU Student Essay Contest

Deadline: September 19

Amount: Up to $1,500

Description: Scholarship open to high school students graduating in 2023 and 2024.

Applicants must submit a piece of original writing that responds to the identified topic

regarding church-state separation and religious freedom.

Questbridge

Sponsor: Questbridge

Amount: Varies

Closing Date: September 26, 2024 

Description: 4-year, full-ride scholarship connecting high-achieving low-income high school seniors with Questbridge partner colleges; some partner colleges are open to undocumented students.


Coca-Cola Scholarship

Description: $2,500 scholarship open to current college students pursuing a degree related to manufacturing.


R2C Scholarship

Closing Date: September 30, 2024

Amount: $1,000

GPA Requirement: N/A

Description: Scholarship is open to U.S. citizens and legal residents who are

starting a program of higher education (college or graduate school) within the next 12

months or are currently enrolled. Applicant must be 17 years of age or older (there is

no maximum age limit). Applicant must share in three sentences of less why they

are getting their degree.


Future Mentors Scholarship

Deadline: September 30

Amount: $2,500

GPA Requirement: N/A

Description: This scholarship is for incoming and current full-time undergraduate and graduate students at accredited colleges/universities. The application requires an essay on mentorship. Undocumented and international students can apply.


United States Senate Program - Virginia

Deadline: September 30, 2024

Amount: $10,000

Description: Juniors and seniors who currently hold a student leadership position and

possess a strong interest in government, public service, and history are encouraged to

apply for the USSYP. This program includes an opportunity to experience national

government in action as well as be awarded a $10,000 college scholarship.

Descriptions Several different scholarships open to students who are currently enrolled in a BA nursing program at an AACN member institution.


Golden Door Scholars

Sponsor: Golden Door 

Amount: varies ($40,000 maximum)

Closing Date: October 1, 2024 at 11:59 PM EST 

Description: $40,000 maximum scholarship available specifically for DACA recipients, TPS holders, and students who are undocumented (Visa holders may also be eligible to apply. Please email info@goldendoorscholars.org for clarification). Application typically opens in September and closes towards the end of October. Applicants must either be in high school in the United States, have graduated from a U.S. high school, or obtained a GED certificate in the U.S. To receive the scholarship, students must attend one of Golden Door’s partner colleges (linked here).


PEO Star Scholarship

Sponsor: PEO International

Amount: $2,500

Closing Date: October 15, 2024 (Nomination Deadline)

Description: $2,500 scholarship open to female high school seniors with a 3.0+ GPA who with leadership and community service experience. Must be nominated by local PEO chapter to apply. Please email Ms. Miller at college@acps.k12.va.us if you’re interested in being nominated. After being nominated, you will receive the application via email and must submit your completed application 30 days after the link is emailed.


American Muscle Student Scholarship

Sponsor: American Muscle

Amount: $2,500

Closing Date: October 15, 2024 at 12 PM EST 

Description: $2,500 scholarship open to high school seniors and current college students pursuing an automotive-themed major.


National Young Arts Foundation 

Sponsor:  The National Foundation for the Advancement of Artists

Amount: up to $10,000

Closing Date: October 17, 2024 

Description: Open to students in grades 10-12 who excel in cinematic arts, dance, theater, music, writing, or visual arts. Cash awards up to $10,000 and master classes with world-renowned artists.


College JumpStart Scholarship 

Sponsor: College JumpStart

Amount: $1,000

Closing Date: October 17, 2024

Description: $1,000 essay-based scholarship open to 10th-12th graders, college students, and non-traditional students. Financial need is not considered.


Zombie Apocolypse Scholarship

Deadline: October 31

Amount: $2,000 

GPA Requirement: N/A

Description: Current high school and college students can apply for a scholarship towards

their college education. Applicants must submit a written response to the question about

a zombie apocalypse.


Voice of Democracy Scholarship 

Sponsor: VFW

Amount: $30,000 maximum

Closing Date: October 31, 2024

Description: $30,000 maximum scholarship based on the essay prompt "America: Where do we go from here?” open to students in grades 9-12.
