SUMMER 2026 NEWSLETTER

LOOKING BACK ON A SUMMER OF CONNECTIONS

Summer is always a special and busy season at Tyndale. With Day Camp in full swing, children filling our spaces, activities happening throughout the Centre and programs extending into the neighbourhood, summer brings a unique energy to Tyndale.

From hundreds of neighbours gathering at our annual Community BBQ to children enjoying a summer filled with activities and adventures, and youth taking on new challenges through the Little Burgundy Youth Cooperative, this summer was filled with opportunities to learn, grow and connect.

Every activity, every meal shared, every story read under a tree and every milestone celebrated helped strengthen the connections that make Tyndale and Little Burgundy such a special community.

Here’s a look back at some of the moments that made Summer 2026 so memorable.

BRINGING THE COMMUNITY TOGETHER

Our Annual Community BBQ Kicked Off the Summer

Summer got off to a wonderful start with our annual Community BBQ, which brought more than 500 neighbours, families, volunteers, staff and community partners together in Little Burgundy.

With food, music, activities and plenty of familiar faces, the BBQ was a chance to reconnect, catch up with neighbours and simply enjoy being together. Year after year, this event reminds us just how special it is to gather as a community.

A heartfelt thank you to the many volunteers, partners and supporters who helped make this year’s BBQ such a success.

SUMMER IN FULL SWING

Learning, exploring and connecting at Tyndale

There was no shortage of activity at Tyndale this summer! From the youngest campers to our seniors, the Centre and the surrounding neighbourhood were filled with opportunities to learn, explore, connect and have fun.

For five busy weeks, July Day Camp brought its usual energy to Tyndale, with weekly themes, activities, outings and plenty of opportunities for campers to try new things and make memories with friends. The summer included the much-anticipated annual day trip to Camp Amy Molson and wrapped up with the Day Camp Talent Show, where campers had their chance to take the stage and shine.

The learning continued in August with our Literacy Camp, where children spent three weeks strengthening their reading, writing and math skills while still enjoying the creativity and fun of summer. Meanwhile, the Children’s Library continued a favourite summer tradition with Reading in the Park at Vinet Park twice a week, bringing books and stories outside for children and families to enjoy together.

Our teenagers were busy too. Through the Little Burgundy Youth Cooperative, local youth gained hands-on work experience while developing skills in leadership, teamwork and entrepreneurship. Working together throughout the summer, they took on responsibilities, developed projects, earned money and learned what it means to be part of a cooperative.

Summer was just as active for members of our Seniors Wellness Centre, with regular activities and opportunities to stay active, socialize and enjoy the season. One particularly special activity brought our seniors together with children from July Day Camp. The children learned about the garden, picked fresh vegetables and herbs, and made bracelets alongside the seniors. It was a wonderful opportunity for two generations of the Tyndale community to spend time together and learn from one another.

Whether it was a story shared under the trees, a new adventure at camp, a teenager taking on a new responsibility or children and seniors spending time together, summer at Tyndale was filled with the everyday moments that bring our community closer.

ONE LAST SUMMER ADVENTURE

Family Weekend at Camp Amy Molson

To close out a busy summer, Tyndale families headed out of the city for Family Weekend at Camp Amy Molson. Over the weekend, families had a chance to step away from their everyday routines and spend time together surrounded by nature. From swimming and boating to hiking, campfires and simply enjoying time outdoors, the weekend offered families a chance to connect with one another and with other members of the Tyndale community.

Family Weekend has become a special summer tradition at Tyndale and was a fitting way to bring another memorable season to a close.

CELEBRATING MILESTONES

Congratulations to Our PPE and Grade 6 Graduates

Before summer got fully underway, we had the opportunity to celebrate two very special groups of graduates at Tyndale.

Participants in our Pre-Employment Program celebrated the completion of six months of hard work and personal growth. Throughout the program, they strengthened their employment, language, digital and life skills while building the confidence and tools needed to take their next steps toward employment, education and other opportunities.

We also celebrated our Grade 6 students as they prepared to say goodbye to elementary school and begin high school. For many, Tyndale has been part of their after-school routine for years, making the occasion especially meaningful for the staff who have had the privilege of watching them learn and grow.

Congratulations to all of our graduates! We are proud of how far you have come and can’t wait to see what comes next.

REMEMBERING OLIVER JONES

Honouring a Little Burgundy legend and a cherished friend of Tyndale

This summer, Little Burgundy and communities far beyond our neighbourhood mourned the loss of legendary jazz pianist Oliver Jones.

Born and raised in Little Burgundy, Mr. Jones became one of Canada’s most celebrated jazz musicians, carrying the musical legacy of his neighbourhood with him onto stages around the world. Yet despite his extraordinary career and accomplishments, his connection to Little Burgundy remained an important part of his life.

Mr. Jones was also a longtime friend and supporter of Tyndale St-Georges. His generosity, encouragement and connection to our community meant a great deal to us over the years, and we were fortunate to count him among the many remarkable people who have been part of Tyndale’s story.

His legacy reaches far beyond his music. It lives on in the community he proudly represented, in the generations of musicians he inspired and in the many people whose lives he touched.

As Tyndale approaches its 100th anniversary, we are especially grateful to reflect on the people who have helped shape the story of our community. Oliver Jones will forever be an important part of that story.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and all those who knew and loved him.

A NEW SEASON BEGINS

Welcoming Back Our Fall Programs

As we look back on an incredible summer, a new season at Tyndale is already beginning.

Next week, our halls will once again welcome students in our After School Program and participants in a new cohort of our Pre-Employment Program. Our Early Childhood and Families Department will also begin its fall programming, welcoming young children and their families back for another season of learning, play and connection.

With the return of these programs comes the familiar rhythm of the school year and a new season of activity throughout the Centre. From supporting children as they settle into a new school year and creating spaces for young families to learn and grow together, to helping adults build skills and take important steps toward their employment goals, there is plenty to look forward to this fall.

After a busy and memorable summer, we’re excited to see our community back for another season at Tyndale!
