HBC's Fall Clean Up Week: Join the Litter Bust!

On October 5th, the Halifax Beautification Committee held a special Kick-Off event to mark the start of their Fall Clean Up initiative. Those who came to the Town Green to participate were given volunteers with t-shirts, bags, loaner safety vests, and loaner litter grabbers. To make the first day of this project special, the Committee also entered participants in raffles and provided pizza. HBC thanks Cape Cod Pizza for donating lunch, as well as Rodney's Kitchen and Halifax Nails and Spa for donating gift certificates, and Nessralla's Farm for donating a mum, to be won in the raffle. Additionally, HBC thanks Card My Yard, who donated the use of the reusable Fall Cleanup sign, and Wal-Mart for donating 120 trash bags to be filled by litter busters!

Volunteers for the Clean Up worked together to remove litter along roughly 60 miles of roadways and at our open spaces, and the initiative has made a huge difference

Where you see red on the map here is where people have litter busted, but there are many more roadways that need our help. Even as this Fall Clean Up week comes to a close, it is important that we all do our part in keeping our community clean. Each of us can make a difference, and it can start here with cleaning up the remaining roads.

Thank you to HBC and all who participated in this initiative, and together, let's continue to keep Halifax litter-free!

Historical Tidbit: Report of the schools of the Town of Halifax

for the school year 1868-9

"NORTH DISTRICT

For five Terms in succession, Harriet M. Washburne, of Bridgewater, has been the teacher in this district, closing her labors in the Summer Term of 1868. It would be folly for us to enumerate her virtues, as a teacher, now, for we have done so repeatedly in the past. It was with regret that we saw her retire from the field."

"For the Winter Term, the successor of Miss W., was Miss Sarah J. Keith, of Middleboro, who is a teacher of fine address, dignity of character, and rare independence of thought and action. It is with pleasure that we find a teacher of such modesty and personal accomplishments in our public schools.

In discipline, she is eminently just, but not of sufficient severity to ensure that perfect tranquility which we so much esteem. We are sometimes told that moral suasion is most effectual; but our humble opinion is, that it is best, first to exhaust it, and then apply the rod, not frequently, but in a manner that would be remembered, if needed, for a term. A scholar whose physical power is sufficient to resist successfully the teacher, and who manifests the disposition to do so, in cast of punishment, must be expelled from school until he can be restored with sufficient guarantees, for his future conduct. This we hold to be sound doctrine.

The examination was orderly, and a good degree of progress, in the various branches, shown. There was one feature which the Committee notes with sorrow, that was the absence of the parents. In times past, on similar occasions, we have found the school-room crowded. The inference is unmistakable."

History Respectfully submitted,

Sue Basile

Climate Can Do:

3 Tips for a Sustainable Halloween

With spooky season underway, it is important to remember how our choices impact the environment around us. According to Duke University, a 2019 study found that discarded Halloween costumes alone generated 2,000 tons of plastic waste each year. Luckily there are many quick and easy tricks to help you cut down your eco-footprint.

Recycle Costumes and Decor

When it comes to Halloween, some things never go out of style. From spiders to skeletons to witch cauldrons -- keep your "old" decor to use again next year and save time, money, and the planet!

You might consider shopping at thrift and consignment shops or try something new and DIY your own costume! The cape from one year's vampire costume might be the finishing touch for next year's superhero. A pillow case can be easily decorated at home and makes a great trick-or-treat bag. Old stockings with runs and pulls can be transformed into spider-webbing. And cardboard boxes can be cut and painted to look like tombstones in your front yard display!

Maximize Pumpkin Usage

When pumpkins are tossed in the trash and begin to breakdown, they create methane, a powerful greenhouse gas. To help prevent this, try to use every part of your pumpkin this Halloween!

Pumpkin seeds, flesh, and rind can be used in a ton of delicious recipes such as pumpkin bread, pudding, pie, and more. For inspiration, you can look online or visit Delish.

Once the season's over, compost your pumpkin, mixing it oxygen while it breaks down decreases methane emissions and improves your garden's nutrient-rich soil.

Shop Sustainably

Shopping locally is also an easy way to limit waste. Support local farmers this season and buy locally-grown pumpkins; and shop local or fair trade chocolatiers.

The Action Team's 6th Annual Sock Drive Has Begun!

The Action Team is a state and federally recognized 501c3 nonprofit that organizes community charity events, and this year they are hosting their 6th annual Sock Drive. To participate in this event, the Halifax Police Department has set up a donation collection for new socks in the Halifax Police Station at 540 Plymouth Street. Once donations are collected, the socks will be distributed nationwide to homeless individuals through the Joy of Sox Organization to provide homeless individuals with warmth and good health during the upcoming months.

In the thick of Winter, socks can at times be more important than food. "New socks contribute to better mobility, minimize the possibility of frostbite and reduce the risk of cellulitis, impetigo, fungal infection, trench foot, and skin breakdown," the Action Team explains. Last year, the organization was able to collect 6,720 pairs of socks, and over the last 5 years, they have collected more than 20,000 pairs. This year's goal is 7,000 pairs of socks!

The Halifax Police Department is proud to participate in this nationwide charity event, and you too can make a difference with a simple donation of new socks. No contribution is too small, and all types of socks are welcome. Help give back to local Halifax and communities in need nationwide this winter season!

This year's donation period will run until November 30th. For more information, contact Laicey Ieronimo with the Action Team at carveractionteam@gmail.com.

Our Furry Friends

“Such short little lives our pets have to spend with us, and they spend most of it waiting for us to come home each day.

It is amazing how much love and laughter they bring into our lives and even how much closer we become with each other because of them.” ~ John Grogan

“Dogs are the leaders of the planet. If you see two life forms, one of them's making a poop, the other one's carrying it for him, who would you assume is in charge.”

~ Jerry Seinfeld

“ Pets devour the loneliness. They give us purpose, responsibility, a reason for getting up in the morning, and a reason to look to the future. They ground us, help us escape the grief, make us laugh, and take full advantage of our weakness by exploiting our furniture, our beds, and our refrigerator. We wouldn't have it any other way.”

~ Nick Trout, Tell Me Where It Hurts: A Day of Humor, Healing and Hope in My Life As an Animal Surgeon

“I think dogs are the most amazing creatures; they give unconditional love. For me they are the role model for being alive.” ~ Gilda Radner
