Quote of the week...

Peyton Manning said, "I've never left the field saying I could have done more to get ready and that gives me piece of mind."

Success comes from preparation.

• It comes from doing the work.

• It comes from living the details.

What does great preparation look like to Peyton Manning?

It's a commitment to excellence - In 2002, Tony Dungy took over as the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts. Peyton Manning had already been a star in the league, but he told Tony on the first day that he wanted to be coached hard and he wanted to win a championship.

Tony shrugged it off as a normal player saying it, but 2 weeks later Peyton showed up in his office. Tony said, "Peyton showed up with 7 pages of yellow legal pad saying, 'This is what I plan to work on this offseason and you need to help me with these.'"

Takeaway: Excellence isn't a one-time event, it's a journey and a mindset.

It's preparing with precision - When he was younger, the Colts were said to have gone months practicing without a dropping a pass. And if they did, they would run the play over until it was right. Dominic Rhodes said, "After practice, you'd see the man (Peyton) in the weight room getting stronger, and then he'd be back watching more film. Every single day."

Takeaway: True progress requires a commitment to self-improvement and your craft.

It's living the details - In the 2012 offseason, Peyton Manning was recovering from neck surgery and working out with former teammates at Duke University. He was getting better, but wanted to see if he was ready for games.

To get a sense of how healthy he was, he made them recreate the entire 2009 AFC Championship game vs the NY Jets. They ran every play in order, but they didn't just run their plays, they simulated TV timeouts, the half-time break, and stood on the sideline for the Jets offense. Austin Collie said, "He thought about everything, all of the possibilities."

Takeaway: When you live the details and prepare for everything, it makes it easier for you to adapt and feel confident in your preparation.

You have to show up and do the work consistently, but you also have to bring intensity and mindfulness to how you prepare. These are great examples of being intentional about how you practice to prepare the mind and body. Be intentional about how you work.

Peyton's greatest ability wasn't his arm strength or accuracy, it was his ability to prepare.

Student Leadership

SCHSL Captains Council and Student Leadership Summit - The South Carolina High School League hosts Virtual Sports Captains Workshop's and Leadership Summit's throughout the year. I encourage all of our athletes to watch the following videos:

NFHS Courses for students - The NFHS has released three courses and two in particular are for our student leaders. Dan Schuster, NFHS director of educational services stated, “We believe these courses will bring value to those who take them and will contribute to improving the interscholastic experience for young people.” The courses are called “Becoming a Leader” and “Leading Others”. Each course uses real student testimonies and focuses on building stronger student leaders.

Athletic Fees

Athletic fees can be paid in the school store. These must be paid before your student competes in an athletic competition.
