Construction employment falls in June
Canadian employment increased by 60,000 positions in June, says Statistics Canada in its latest Labour Force Survey, but the construction sector did not contribute to the gains. Following two months with little change, construction employment decreased by 14,000, or just shy of one per cent, in June. Year-over-year, employment in the industry was little changed in June.
Statistics Canada says the June increase in employment was the largest since January 2023. Employment growth had moderated from February to May, averaging 20,000 per month, following strong growth from October 2022 to January 2023 where average gains were roughly 79,000 per month.

Metrolinx announces start of construction on next phase of Hazel McCallion LRT
Metrolinx announced that crews building the Hazel McCallion Line (Hurontario LRT) pushed a concrete passageway under the Lakeshore West rail tracks at the Port Credit GO Station using an engineering method known as the Verona System. This advanced technology ensured that service on the Lakeshore West Line could continue for the 33,000 daily riders. This passageway – called a push box – will be the tunnel through which future light rail vehicles will travel in and out of Port Credit Station once the Hazel McCallion Line is in service.

Cement-Free Concrete Made by C-Crete Technologies Gets Inaugural Pour in Seattle Building
C-Crete Technologies proudly unveiled its groundbreaking cement-free concrete, a first-of-its-kind innovation in the construction industry, with its debut pour in a commercial building in Seattle. Ontario funding job training for trades
The Ontario government is putting $2.5 million towards training programs for students and others looking for careers in southwestern Ontario. The funds are being directed to four free training projects that will help 385 jobseekers over the age of 55 and 2,300 students, two groups that face barriers to employment.
Although research has shown that more than two-thirds of people over the age of 55 feel the job market is closed to them, and youth in Ontario are unemployed at a rate twice as high as the provincial average, more than 17,000 jobs are going unfilled in the London area.
