Your Donation Can Save a Life
Give Miami Day is November 18
The biggest day of the year for Miami’s philanthropic community is right around the corner. Give Miami Day, a 24-hour online campaign to raise funds for your favorite local charities, will take place on Thursday, November 18, starting at the stroke of midnight. For us at Safe Haven for Newborns is a very special day too. Your tax-deductible donations allow us to continue our mission to help the most vulnerable among us, the newborn.

We believe every child needs an opportunity to be born, to have a loving family, and to live their dreams. And it all begins when they are still in their mother’s womb. To us, it is very important to reach her before she gives birth. To let her know she is not alone, to be her safe haven in her moment of crisis and provide the support and guidance she needs.

Donations raised during Give Miami Day will enable us to continue to provide the essential programs she needs. It will help us operate the 24/7 confidential, multilingual helpline. It will allow us to continue partnering with agencies across all 67 Florida counties to provide counseling and parenting services; make arrangements for placement in shelters, maternity homes, provide temporary housing, help for abuse cases, and health-related issues. It would also allow us to provide baby items, referrals to adoption agencies, or confidentially placing their newborn with a staff member of a designated safe haven facility -- hospitals, manned 24/7 fire and EMS stations.

We are never judgmental, and we help everyone. Our mission is to give the mother-to-be a chance to carry the unborn child to term in a safe environment by providing her with the guidance and support she needs.

Through the Tears...
I would like to share with you a call we received to our 24/7 helpline from a distressed young girl in her early teens who was expecting. In the course of our conversation with her, we discovered she was very close to her due date and had not received medical attention. She thought that if she did not think about it, it would go away. So she went on about her life hiding her pregnancy from her family and friends until her parents found out and threw her out of the house and had to drop out of high school. Fortunately, she had a friend that told her about A Safe Haven for Newborns. Through the tears, you could hear the panic in her voice. She felt abandoned by her family and very alone. What was she going to do; how would she take care of a newborn when she couldn’t take care of herself? Dark thoughts were her constant companion.

We quickly began working on her behalf to secure a place for her to stay, provided her with a referral for medical attention and counseling. We also made arrangements at a nearby hospital for her to safely delivery her baby when the time came.

A few weeks later, after our first call, she gave birth to a healthy baby girl. She decided the best option for the baby was to place her, confidentially, in the Safe Haven for Newborns program for adoption.

This is just one example of the calls that we receive. Our 24/7 confidential and multilingual helpline receives, on average, seven to eight calls per day. The calls range from a 32-year-old pregnant woman living in her car because her family turned their back on her; a 17-year-old high school student hiding her pregnancy who was scared and did not know what to do, a 19-year college student with no medical care and due any day. We also have had callers as young as a 13-year-old girl who was pregnant and learned about A Safe Haven for Newborns while watching a nationally televised program.

Everyone is helped. No one is turned away.
