Carpe Noctem! - Seize the Night!

Hello and welcome to the Carpe Noctem! newsletter

In this newsletter you will read about

  • My exhibit at the ACM
  • My fall workshop
  • The Click! 2024 conference
  • eBook? eBook!

Hello everyone and welcome! Summer is well on its way and I hope you had some chance to be on vacations, enjoy the days that were warm, sunny and not humid, perhaps started a new chapter in your life or simply plugged away to wait for fall.

The biggest announcement for myself is perhaps that I will be retiring from sciences and technology at the end of the year. Starting January 1st, I will be primarily a photographer and maybe I'll finally find time to renovate my bathroom and have other things to occupy my mind and body.

You are receiving this newsletter, because you signed up for it or gave me permission to add you to the distribution list on one of my workshops, presentations, live or online events. You can unsubscribe at any time, simply scroll to the bottom to find that link. If you want to continue receiving it, thank you for your interest, you will remain on the list without further action.

The latest Exhibit is on display!

A collaboration with my good friend Lisa Ryan, Industrial Beauty - Luminous Desert is on display at the Art Complex Museum in Duxbury and will remain there until November 3rd, 2024. We have 24 pieces of art on the walls to fill the Phoenix gallery, 12 each from Lisa and myself, mixed up to contrast the bright lights of industrial installations with the muted lights of the desert created by Lisa's light painting. If you're not in the Boston area, please take a sneak peak at it on my Facebook page.

The reception will be on September 22 from 1 to 4 p.m. and you will see a reminder about that a week before through my newsletter, or you can follow me on Facebook or Instagram to see its announcement. I hope to connect with some of you there! Here is the Full Stacktrum Symphony (ask me to explain that title!) :)

Fall Workshop

If you live in the Boston area and want to explore urban night photography, consider attending this workshop.

I will be teaching Urban Night Photography in Boston at the Griffin Museum of Photography from September 18 through November 13, nine Wednesday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m.

The workshop consists of a 3 hour introduction on Zoom and then alternating five classroom sessions and four photo shoots. We will take photos in Boston, with classroom sessions at the Griffin Museum, which include a comprehensive introduction to the topic, recurring photo reviews and live editing sessions.

Post-processing techniques will emphasize the powerful Lightroom / CameraRaw masking features to handle the sometimes extreme dynamic range of cityscapes.

Click! 2024 Conference

If a 9-week committment is too much for you, consider registering for the Click! 2024 conference on September 7th, from  8:45 am – 4:00 pm. I will be one of 14 speakers at the conference and this being the 9th annual conference of its kind, I will have been part of it 8 times!

I will be presenting an Introduction to Night Photography twice that day, in the morning and afternoon. Other speakers will cover a wide spectrum of topics from composition, inspirational, floral, people, mobile to infrared photography.

The Click! conference has always been structured like the venerable NECCC conference, just at a smaller scale. Presentations througout the day are combined with vendor exhibits and photo shoot setups and an interesting keynote speaker to round it out.

eBooks

I am considering to create a new downloadable eBook on aurora photography. We are close to the maximum of solar activity and the recent strong aurora from a few months ago (left) is likely only the beginning of more to come and fully visible in Massachusetts or other states below the 40 degree of latitude.

The eBook would be about 20 pages long and contain general info about the aurora, photography guidelines for the various types of aurora as well as editing tips and tricks for post processing. And, of course, lots of visual eye candy such as the image here.

T

Please let me know if you are interested in this, take the poll below:

Are you interested in an eBook on how to photograph and edit the aurora?
I'd order it right away!
Maybe (respond to this email to let me know what it would need to be interesting enough)
Probably not.
