Bishop Heyd Monday Notes

Last week’s panel on AI and the NY region.

All things come of thee, O Lord, and of thine own have we given thee. (1 Chronicles 29:14)

Our congregations have begun their annual stewardship season. Each community has its own rituals for inviting gifts, and each brings conversations about budgets, about anxieties and possibilities alike.

David's prayer in Chronicles names what we know: everything belongs to God. Theologian Kathryn Tanner calls this an economy of grace. God isn't diminished by giving, and neither are we. God's giving invites our own.

  • We share a faith of abundance, but we're tangled in systems of scarcity. Our neighbors are paying more for gas and food, and heating oil will cost more this winter.
  • Pledges alone no longer cover mission and buildings, so our congregations are stewarding their places by sharing space, and we're building regional endowments to complement local giving.

We're also anticipating a world transformed by artificial intelligence. At last week's forum on AI, researchers from McKinsey & Company described an economy of work and an economy of belonging, both changing fast.

  •  Our congregations have offered belonging for ten generations. Our stewardship conversations can carry that belonging to generations still to come.

However we give, our stewardship responds to what has already been given to us. We don't belong because we give. We belong because God has given us grace.

Blessings on your stewardship efforts and for the week ahead.

Grace & Peace,

Stewardship

Last Sunday as part of the current Stewardship Campaign at Trinity Fishkill, a very, moving heartfelt message was given in support of our Stewardship efforts.

My name is Sharon Urquhart. I've been a parishioner of Trinity since 1980. For those that might be newer to Trinity, you probably look around and see a beautiful historical church with lots of empty pews...but when I look around, I'm filled with the memories of my youngest daughter's baptism, my reception into the Episcopal church, both my daughter's confirmations, their weddings, my father's funeral service, and the baptisms of my four grandchildren. I see pews full on a routine Sunday morning and aisles lined with folding chairs during holidays. I see the choir section filled with beautiful voices and the occasional folding chair to seat the overflow choir members. I see a parish hall where the Sunday School classrooms are full every Sunday with children of all ages, nursery through high school. But what does that have to do with Stewardship, you might ask?

Well, it's my dream and my prayer that I might live long enough to see this church full like that again. Unfortunately, over the years, we have lost parishioners through death, out of town relocations, opinion differences and a pandemic...most of which were out of our control. Some, including myself, are of the mindset, though, that the pendulum is starting to swing back to a renewed interest in religion. With the hope that that is true, it is imperative that we select the right priest, that we get creative in developing programs or events that draw people in and get them to want to keep coming back.

That requires a budget that can sustain this...hence our stewardship campaign. For the last few years, we've paid for supply priests to cover Sunday mornings. Now we need to contribute to a priest in charge, an assistant priest and a supply priest to cover our collaborative three churches each week. Along with that comes health insurance and housing, expenses for an administrative assistant, organist and utility costs, as well. A budget cannot be created from guesswork on how much money might loosely be dropped into the collection plate each week. It can only be derived from pledges...commitments from each of us. I know times are difficult for many and the church is often seen as a lower priority. But, I also know how generous this parish can be. Our outreach program has helped thousands over the years...from school kits for migrant workers, food for the needy through the food bank and Holiday food bags, clothes and toiletries for abused women, and Christmas gifts to needy children, to name just a few. All of those are important, but so is this parish's needs. Those that have flown on planes know that in the case of an emergency, flight attendants instruct you to place oxygen masks on yourself before assisting young children. Why?...because you are of no help to others if you go unconscious. The same is true of Trinity. If Trinity closes, we will no longer be here to help others.

God continues to bestow many blessings on us each day...some big...some small. The trouble is, for the small ones, we often don't take the time to SEE them and recognize them for what they are. We need to stop focusing on the negativity surrounding us...and on the things we don't have. Instead we need to take a moment to open our eyes and truly take in the beauty and blessings that surround us, regardless of the form in which they may appear. Then, with a grateful and appreciative heart ask ourselves, "Am I truly giving back to God all of which I am capable?" Only you and God know if your response is true. But as soon as your truthful answer to that question is "yes", then, and only then, the next time a priest holds up an offertory plate and says, "All things come from you, oh Lord", will you be able to confidently, gratefully and truthfully respond, "And of thine own have we given thee!"

2027 Pledges

Parishioners are reminded that pledge cards may be mailed, turned in by hand to Dave Bishop during the week, or by offering plate. Last scheduled opportunity at a church service will be Sunday, October 25, 2026. Goal is receipt of vast majority of pledge cards by November 6, 2026. Please contact Dave Bishop or Pam Bunker if you have any questions. Stewardship team may reach out to past contributors ahead of our next vestry meeting scheduled November 12, 2026. Vestry appreciates your support and encouragement. Trinity Fishkill has stood for centuries. Its people will sustain it.
