Fall Outreach at the Transfer Station
With the success of the July 26th Outreach at the Transfer Station, Manager Brian Bartram and the TRAC committee have scheduled another outreach day for Thursday, September 25th. Once again, tables will be set up in front of the food-waste drop-off area and in front of the Swap Shop. Please stop by to ask questions about recycling, look through materials on the table, or join the Food Waste Pilot. Salisbury and Sharon Selectmen and Selectwomen have even offered to volunteer for an hour here and there.

Why Separate Food Waste from Your Garbage?
Food scraps, also called organics—including meal prep peels, skins, seeds, etc as well as plate scrapings, leftovers, and rotten food—constitute the largest category of garbage that gets trucked to landfills or incinerators. In Salisbury and Sharon, our garbage is trucked to a Pennsylvania landfill.
However, food scraps are not trash; they are a resource that can be turned into compost. Recycling food scraps into compost captures their nutrients and energy, but when thrown in the garbage hopper and then trucked to a landfill, that resource is lost. In addition, landfilled food waste releases methane gas. Composting is a far better way to manage food scraps!
Think about joining the Food Waste Pilot program at the Transfer Station. To join, write to foodwastepilot@gmail.com, and we will get your household a starter kit.

Why does so much of the food produced go uneaten?
The statistics from the EPA (and AI) are shocking:
