Dear Buckeye,
We are writing with an update about the new Department of Homeland Security rule that eliminates “duration of status” for international students and visiting scholars in the United States on F and J visas. The final rule is set to take effect on September 15, 2026, and impacts how F students and J exchange visitors are admitted into the United States, restricts changes to programs and places limitations on the length of time they can stay in the United States.
The Office of International Affairs has added preliminary information to our website to help you understand the new rule and how it may affect you. We encourage you to review the following resources:
As we continue to review the rule and receive additional guidance, updates may be made, so please monitor your Ohio State email and the Office of International Affairs website for the latest information.
We understand that this change may raise questions or concerns. If you have questions about your individual situation, please contact our immigration specialists at iss@osu.edu. You may also schedule an appointment with an immigration specialist through the Office of International Affairs.
As always, Ohio State is dedicated to providing you with valuable resources to ensure your well-being. Should you need assistance or emotional support, students can reach out to the Office of Student Life’s Counseling and Consultation Service.
Please know that you are a valued and important member of our Buckeye community. Your presence and contributions enrich Ohio State, and we remain committed to supporting you as we learn more about the implications of the new rule.
Sincerely,
Kaya Şahin, PhD
