We love summer, but hate fleas and ticks

Maya,

As we finally head into the warm months here in Vermont, we welcome long dog walks, in the woods. Fleas and ticks are already especially bad this year, so it's important to treat your pets with flea and tick treatments to keep them safe.

Lyme disease can take days to months before symptoms appear. But when the symptoms come on, they cause pain and fatigue in pets. This is Aggie. One day, she started walking like an ancient grandmother–all stiff and sore. Aggie was diagnosed with Lyme. Aggie responded well to treatment and returned to feeling like her old spry self. Her mom now keeps Aggie on flea/tick preventative year-round and has her vaccinated against Lyme.

You can stock up on boxes right here at WCHS, or purchase treatments by the dose (very handy for households with multiple, different-sized dogs!)

ParaDefense Advanced for dogs (fleas and ticks): $10 per dose

Effipro Plus for dogs and cats (fleas and ticks): $10 per dose

Treatments are available for over-the-counter purchase during our walk-in hours on Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays 12-4 p.m. We appreciate you calling ahead so we can have your medication ready for you when you arrive.

Creative ways to help the pets

Black Rover
Grace Cottage supply drive

There are infinite ways to help the dogs and cats here at the shelter. Of course, you can always give a cash donation, but here are some other ideas and recent examples of creative giving:

  • Black Rover, a local Led Zeppelin cover band performed at the Latchis Theater earlier this month (first photo). They generously donating a portion of the concert proceeds to WCHS. Thank you, Black Rover!

  • Grace Cottage in Newfane organized a massive drive of food, toys, and other supplies for the shelter pets (second photo). We were thrilled to have the opportunity to thank them with a visit from kittens and a dog. Thank you to all of the nurses and staff at Grace Cottage for their generosity!

  • National Honor Society students at BUHS set up their own event at the Brattleboro Food Coop soliciting donations to WCHS as part of their required volunteer and service hours. Thank you so much for thinking of us, and organizing this successful event!

What else can you do? The possibilities are endless.

  • Bake sale
  • Yard sale
  • Car wash
  • Fundraise for your birthday on social media
  • Turn your next BBQ or block party into a supply drive for the shelter
  • The next time you buy food, toys, or supplies for your pets, purchase an extra one for the pet pantry

We are overwhelmed by the generosity of this community every day.

Millie, Dozer, Tippy, ChiChi, Macey and Yuki (our current dogs), and Gidget (our cat) send you woofs and purrs of thanks for everything that you do to help keep them safe, fed, and healthy while they find their forever homes.
