Business After Hours / Ribbon Cutting: Handsell
October 1, 2026 - 5:30 - 7:00 p.m.
4837 Indiantown Road, Vienna, MD
You're Invited! "History Lives at Handsell" is celebrating the completion of their new "Three Cultures Center" and is inviting you join the occasion with a Business After Hours and Ribbon Cutting.
The “old brick house” at Chicone, known as Handsell, located on Indiantown Road north of Vienna, Dorchester County, Maryland, was purchased by the Nanticoke Historic Preservation Alliance with a Preservation Easement from the Maryland Historic Trust. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2008, the site is used to interpret the Native People’s contact period with the English, the enslaved and later African American story and the life of all those who lived at Handsell. The new Three Cultures Center is barn-like, completely ADA accessible building will contain a multi-purpose space for programming and events, with public bathroom facilities, office and much-needed storage. It will also contain the the newly acquired circa 1730 interior paneling from "My Lady Sewall’s Manor" house in Secretary. This architectural treasure had been in possession of the Brooklyn Museum for over a century when the NHPA saved it from the auction block and returned it to Dorchester County.
We hope to see you, and perhaps a guest or two at Handsell in this long awaited celebration.

Making Young People ITCH for Healthcare Careers: A Long-Form Chat With Judith Gieske and Ruth Ann Jones
The Eastern Shore’s growing healthcare system will need more than doctors and nurses. It will need EMTs, technicians, therapists, nursing assistants, laboratory workers, and dozens of other professionals, many of whom could come from the Mid-Shore’s own schools.
That is the idea behind Introduction to Careers in Healthcare, better known as ITCH, a nonprofit that introduces young people to the wide range of careers available in healthcare. Through hands-on Career Clubs, classroom programs, mentoring, shadowing, and visits with working healthcare professionals, ITCH is helping students ages 14 to 18 see career possibilities they might never have considered.
In this Spy long-form interview, ITCH leaders Dr. Judith Gieske and Ruth Ann Jones talk about what they have learned since launching the program and why early exposure matters. Their approach is practical: students learn by doing, whether that means examining a skeleton, watching a cast being applied, climbing aboard an ambulance, meeting an EMT, or talking directly with someone already doing the job.

Cambridge Time Machine: That’s Franklin Roosevelt’s USS Potomac on the Choptank
Franklin D. Roosevelt’s presidential yacht, the USS Potomac, included a smokestack secretly converted into an elevator so he could move between decks in his wheelchair. Roosevelt visited Cambridge in 1935 to dedicate improvements at Long Wharf, and the elevator is now preserved there as a monument. Years later, Elvis Presley bought the former presidential yacht at auction to help save it from being scrapped.

Nause-Waiwash Band of Indians Holding Native American Festival
A local Native American Tribe is preparing for one of their biggest traditions in Dorchester County this weekend.
The Nasue-Waiwash Band of Indians is hosting their 34th annual Native American Festival in Vienna this weekend at the baseball field’s underneath Vienna’s water tower.
But what most may not know is the land has a major significance to the tribe.
“Beyond the ball field where we are is our traditional feast and grounds. This is sacred land. This is where we were. So this is very, very special to us for a lot of reasons,” says Casey Hughes, a member of the Nause-Waiwash.
Demonstrators will be showcasing everything from historical dances to the history of the tribe.
And people are coming from far and wide to celebrate.

Beacon of Hope: Veterans Gala
Join us on Saturday, September 26th from 6pm-10pm at 447 Race Street. The Beacon of Hope: Veterans Gala is more than a formal evening. As part of the inaugural Harriet Tubman Summit, this black-tie event is rooted in gratitude, resilience, and community. Inspired by the courage and service of both Harriet Tubman and our nation’s veterans, the evening will bring together veterans, families, and supporters for a night of reflection, reconnection, and honor. Harriet Tubman’s deep connection to the land as a nurturer, provider, and guide serves as inspiration for the evening. Her legacy reminds us how the land can sustain, heal, and bring people together.
Guests will experience an elegant autumn-inspired farm-to-table dinner featuring locally sourced ingredients from Eastern Shore farms, watermen, and producers. More than a meal, the evening is designed as a storytelling experience. Each course will share the history, culture, and significance behind the food served to the table. Through thoughtful hospitality and community fellowship, the gala will celebrate the traditions of the Chesapeake Bay while honoring service, sacrifice, and unity.
The evening will also feature a special keynote address from a distinguished guest, creating a powerful moment of inspiration and recognition. Guests are encouraged to dress their best and join us for a night that uplifts, connects, and honors those who have served.
Banquet Seating $75.00
