As a college consultant, I often get asked what services I provide to my students and families.
While it’s true that a large portion of the work happens during the end of junior year into senior year, it is just as important to lay the foundation in the earlier years for a successful application season. This can include advising on course selection, colleges of interest, academic pursuits, and meaningful service work.
While I help seniors put their best foot forward on applications, by then it’s too late to course correct. Success in admissions comes from presenting a student’s interests and activities as part of a cohesive, evidence-backed story. To this end, I help freshmen and sophomores proactively plan so they can ultimately tell the story they want to the colleges.
Once junior year wraps up, it’s time to refine the college list and start the brainstorming process for college essays. Of course, there is the main one-page essay that goes to every school, but then there are also the school-specific supplemental essays. Some schools, like Stanford, have eight additional short answer essays in addition to the main college essay. Then there are the UC schools which have their own set of four short essays.
The application itself cannot be ignored. The Common Application asks for activities with explanations and an “Additional Information” section which can be helpful to explain anomalies.
The biggest takeaway from my initial meeting with families is that they are afraid that they have “missed” a piece of the admissions process. It is my goal to ensure that this fear is put to rest through monthly e-mail checklists, regular check-ins, and reminders for important dates and deadlines. This combined with a calm demeanor, positive outlook, and a sense of humor provides the ideal ingredients for a recipe for success.
