Good News For Greenport

Historic Preservation Commission Update

The Historic District expansion project is going well, and the consultant is on target to submit a draft to the HPC by the end of November.

A big thank you to Roselle Borrelli for her many years of service to the HPC!

John Robbins has joined the Greenport Historic Preservation Commission. John is a retired historic preservation architect who worked in private practice and public service.  Over the course of his career, he worked for the National Park Service and among other roles was the project architect for the restoration of the Statue of Liberty and the National Gallery's preservation officer. John relocated to Greenport in 2024 and is pleased to have the opportunity to help preserve Greenport's special heritage.

Sidewalk Repairs in Progress

Sidewalk work has begun downtown on Third, Front, Main, South and Adams Streets, as well as on First Street. Please avoid parking in posted work areas and allow extra time when traveling through these areas.

$2.65m in State Grants Awarded for Parks, Water Quality & Sewer Supporting Community Housing

The Village will receive $2.15 million for sewer infrastructure improvements and $500,000 to upgrade its parks and playgrounds. Sewer work will include replacing pipes, improvements at the sewer plant, and work on pump stations, in order to support community housing. Parks money will be used for further upgrades to the Third Street Basketball courts, including plantings, new fencing and installation of a mural; for additional upgrades to the Third Street playground; engineering for a new ice rink in Mitchell Park; skate park re-design; and for the village beaches at the end of Fifth and Sixth streets. Thank you to Assemblyman Tommy John Schiavoni and NY Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie!

Paid Parking Continues to Exceed Expectations

Original revenue expectations for paid parking ($165,000) have already been exceeded. As of October 7th, 2026, $265,000 has been collected, which is approximately $100,000 more than originally projected. This revenue reduces the amount that would otherwise need to be raised through property taxes. The $265,000 collected to date represents approximately 18% of total property tax revenue and is equivalent to approximately $215 per residence in potential property tax increases avoided.

These funds may be used for a variety of projects that benefit low- and moderate – income families. Examples of eligible activities include: elimination of physical barriers to the handicapped, public facilities and improvements, street Improvements, neighborhood improvement programs, economic development, housing rehabilitation, and public service activities. Previous local projects include sidewalk repair and playground renovation. Members of the public are invited to attend this public hearing on Thursday, October 15th at 6pm at the Third Street Firehouse to express their views on local community development needs to be met with these funds. All comments must be received by the Village Clerk for a deadline of October 29th.

Before the Election, Email Your State Senator for a Village Lodging Tax

  • Please join us in asking our State Senator, Anthony Palumbo (palumbo@nysenate.gov), to support legislation authorizing the Village to enact a local lodging tax, similar to authority already granted to more than 50 towns and villages across the state. A lodging tax would allow overnight visitors staying in hotels and other covered accommodations to contribute toward the costs of Village infrastructure and services that support tourism, rather than placing those costs solely on local property taxpayers. The State legislation would not itself impose a tax; it would simply give the Village the authority to consider one locally, including its rate, scope and use of revenues. Assemblyman Tommy John Schiavoni has introduced legislation in the State Assembly, but corresponding legislation must be introduced in the State Senate. A brief sample message residents may use or personalize is here.

Voter Registration

  • Voter registration forms are available at Village Hall. There is no special or separate registration necessary to vote in the Village elections. New York state voters may also register online.
