PSI Turns Out for

ReMA Winter Meeting, Fly-In

ReMA PSI Chapter President Tamara Mayberry and PSI Vice President Kathy DeLano were among a group of PSI Chapter members who attended the ReMA winter meeting, held Feb. 9-12 in Washington, D.C. That ReMA event included governance meetings of the association’s committees, divisions and board of directors as well as a congressional fly-in on Tuesday, Feb. 10.

At the ReMA board meeting on Monday, Feb. 9, Mayberry (pictured at right with ReMA Chair Colin Kelly) discussed the “Future of Fiber Forum” virtual event that PSI and the ReMA Paper Division held on Tuesday, Jan. 27, in cooperation with ReMA. Participants included PSI members, representatives from leading consumer product companies, ReMA staff and others. The three-hour meeting focused on ReMA’s Fiber Recycling Readiness Tool, a research-based online resource that assesses the compatibility of typical consumer fiber-based packaging with the current U.S. residential recycling system. Attendees discussed issues that the fiber tool examines, including design, sortation, sources of contamination, end markets, size of packaging and format. The insights from the event will support the upcoming update to the ReMA Fiber Recycling Readiness Tool. In addition, ReMA is evaluating proposals from consultants to conduct a MRF study that also will inform the tool update.

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) (center) met with a contingent of ReMA and PSI Chapter members on the ReMA congressional fly-in day. PSI Chapter President Tamara Mayberry (last on right) and PSI Chapter Vice President Kathy DeLano (second from right) were among the participants.

On the congressional fly-in day, 135 ReMA members and staff attended 197 meetings with their national elected officials, representing 35 states and Washington, D.C. In those meetings, members highlighted the industry’s more than $183 billion annual economic impact, the more than 600,000 well-paying jobs the industry supports, its essential role in American manufacturing and so much more. PSI Chapter members met with their elected officials from Michigan, Texas, Georgia and other states.

PSI Chapter Communications Chair Lynn Mulder (far left in photo) was among those who met with Rep. Haley Stevens (D-Mich.) (second from left) after she spoke at the fly-in’s kick-off breakfast meeting. “The work of this organization is really quite tremendous,” Stevens said at the breakfast. “I believe that recycling is part of our infrastructure. You’re working alongside our manufacturers. If we don’t have you succeeding, we’re not winning. I’m here to applaud that you’ve taken your time to engage in deep conversations with policymakers and staffers.”

In addition to representing PSI Chapter and ReMA interests at the winter meeting, PSI members met for a group dinner at Bobby Van’s Grill in downtown Washington. The dinner group (pictured above) included (left to right) Jennifer May of Recycling Today Media Group, PSI Events Chair Laura Davis of Midland Davis Corp., PSI Vice President Kathy DeLano of Dixie Pulp & Paper Inc., PSI Communications Chair Lynn Mulder of Pratt Recycling, PSI President Tamara Mayberry of Pioneer Industries International, Marty Seaman of Resource Recycling Systems, ReMA staff member Natalie Betts and Matthew Todd of Resource Recycling Systems.
