Hello from Kate

Did you all enjoy the summer Olympics as much as I did? I watched so much of it that I dreamed Noah Lyles and I tied in the 100m dash. And so the next morning, feeling incredibly energized, I jumped on our treadmill and dialed the speed up and up and up…and then quickly dialed it back down, down, down. Turns out we don’t dream ourselves into an Olympic athlete. It did, however, make me think about a fellow New Canaanite, Rob Fryer, who spoke at a Rotary Club meeting at Lapham about his book Running For Your Life. A quip I recall taking to heart was when he reminded us that we need to stop competing with our younger selves; with what we used to be able to do. We ought to adjust to our bodies' changes and be proud we showed up. I can get on board with that. Some of those changes start with not worrying about what we can no longer do, but what we can. We can give attention to the importance of balance, range of motion, and of embracing assistive devices that actually encourage mobility, not hinder it.

Staying Put supports these efforts and so we build events and activities around keeping our members strong, healthy and informed. This month alone we will be hosting Lunch and Learns focused on healthy living, the importance of good balance, and outfitting your home to support changing bodies. We will host Friday morning walks at Irwin Park for members who are able to safely enjoy the mile + loop at one of the most beautiful times of the year. We've partnered with the New Canaan Y to offer our members a free trial membership this month. And we will be keeping all of our members aware of the latest recommendations on vaccines and vaccine clinics. As a hot tip: unless your doctor has otherwise advised, the current recommendation for flu shots is to wait until mid-October (when there will also be a clinic available through the town). Getting it too early could mean that the effectiveness wears off before the flu season cycles through. These are just a few of the ways Staying Put is here for our members, keeping you safe, healthy, informed, and ok with not being an Olympic athlete.

Special Request: Don't Be Shy!

Please always remember to rsvp for all our events! We call all attendees to remind them and also get food and drinks for the number of people who have signed up.
