Executive Director, Winnie Palmer Nature Reserve | | Winnie Palmer Nature Reserve, is dedicated to maintaining our trails to ensure they are always in prime condition for exploration, exercise, and countless outdoor activities. Embrace the joys of the season and take advantage of our trails, where you can enjoy the wonders of nature while engaging in physical activity. | | | Winnie Palmer Nature Reserve (WPNR) cherish our special connection with the undergraduate students of Saint Vincent College, as it truly sets our programming apart and enriches our community. Our commitment to providing real-world professional experiences for students aligns beautifully with our mission, creating a vibrant space where the community can engage with the natural world alongside eager learners. Students pursuing degrees in education and environmental science have the extraordinary opportunity to transform the reserve into a living laboratory, gaining invaluable hands-on teaching experience that will serve them well in their future careers. This unique partnership not only enhances the educational journey of our students but also fosters a deeper appreciation for the environment among all who visit WPNR. We invite you to join us in celebrating this collaborative spirit and to support the ongoing connection between our students and the wonders of nature! | | We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Ray Kowalski for his remarkable contributions to Winnie Palmer Nature Reserve, particularly in the care and enhancement of our beloved Eastern Screech Owl. As a dedicated member of the Pennsylvania Taxidermy Association, Ray has gone above and beyond, tirelessly working to replace our owl and ensuring that our exhibit space is not only maintained but enriched with natural items that captivate and educate our visitors. His passion for wildlife and commitment to our mission truly elevate the educational experience for our visitors. | | Educators register soon at www.wpnr.org | | We are absolutely thrilled to announce that our beloved Nature House is about to receive some exciting upgrades with the generosity of the Pennsylvania State Marketing Initiatives Program! This cherished space has captured the hearts of our youngest visitors, but it’s time for a little refresh to keep the magic alive. Every day at the Nature House is an adventure filled with creativity, donations of delightful children's books, and even the charming wildlife that finds its way to our doorstep. Our furry friends, the white-footed deer mice, have stolen our hearts with their tenacity! So much so, we've decided to transform the Nature House Mailbox into the whimsical "Mouse House," while a brand-new nature mailbox will soon make its debut. After all, this is a "Nature House" for everyone—both wild and free! As you explore this enchanting space, we kindly remind you to always exercise caution and respect for the wildlife that shares our play areas. Come visit us soon and experience the wonders of the rejuvenated Nature House in 2027! | | Connecting to Student Research | | Winnie Palmer Nature Reserve is proud to be a research hub where collaboration and education flourish, particularly through our partnership with Saint Vincent College. This semester, we are pleased to have three talented undergraduate students studying environmental and mechanical engineering join us in a hands-on project that embodies our commitment to environmental stewardship. Together, alongside Friendship Farms Native Plant Nursery, Bethany, Garrett, and Conner, are creating a bioswale and rock drainage area alongside one of our trails, which not only enhances the trail's usability by keeping it dry but also enriches the local habitat, fostering a thriving ecosystem for all to enjoy. We embrace the innovative contributions of our students, as their research and passion breathe life into our mission at WPNR. We invite families and educators to come and explore our reserve, where curiosity about nature is nurtured, and we hope every visit inspires a deeper connection to the environment. | | As we embark on the exciting journey of planning the 2027 celebration for the 20th Anniversary of our beloved Learning Center Barn, we invite you to be part of this momentous occasion! It's hard to believe that two decades have flown by since we first opened our doors to the public, welcoming families and nature enthusiasts alike to explore, learn, and grow together. This milestone is not just a celebration of our history; it’s a tribute to the vibrant community that has flourished around us. We can't wait to create a series of special activities and events that will bring us all together in joyous celebration! Join us in crafting unforgettable memories as we honor the past and look forward to new adventures at WPNR. Your ideas and memories are precious to us, so don’t hesitate to share them as we make plans for this remarkable celebration! | |
Crow
Trinket Station
Crows have the biggest brain to body ratio among all bird species. Evolved with a highly developed forebrain where intelligence is regulated, the anatomy of the crow brain is similar to humans. Just one of the amazing facts of this bird! We are harnessing in on this amazing creature with our new trinket station for crows! According to the Audubon Society, crows take and leave trinkets due to high intelligence, natural curiosity, and social behaviors like reciprocal feeding and play, rather than simple human-style gratitude. Follow us on social media as we check in weekly to see how our progress is going this fall and winter for fun.
