Librarian Wins Prestigious ALAO Award |
Mandi Goodsett was awarded the Jay Ladd Distinguished Service Award during the Academic Library Association of Ohio (ALAO) Annual Conference in October 2024. The award recognizes individuals who have promoted academic libraries and librarianship not only on his or her own campus, but also within the state. It also recognizes someone who has provided leadership in ALAO and in the librarian profession.
Mandi is the Library’s Performing Arts and Humanities Librarian/OER & Copyright Advisor and an instructor in the Open Education Network – Open Educational Resource Certification Program, emphasizing the tailored support librarians can provide.
She was quoted in a recent OhioLINK article saying “Becoming OER certified allows us to understand faculty’s unique challenges and help them navigate the vast array of available resources.”
Since 2017, Mandi has served as an OhioLINK Affordable Learning Ambassador for the state of Ohio. In addition, she chairs CSU’s OER Committee and co-chairs the annual OpenCon Ohio conference, an event that celebrates open education efforts across Ohio. She coordinates the University’s Textbook Affordability Grant to help CSU faculty learn about teaching with OER and reducing textbook costs for students.
Congratulations Mandi!

Farewell to Library Colleagues | (l-r) Anna Budziak, Jeanie Radtkin, Terri Greer, and Yuezeng Shen |
In December 2024, the library bid farewell to four of our friends and colleagues. Anna Budziak, Reference Computer Technician, began working for CSU 42 years ago! She first worked in Circulation, migrated to Reference, and eventually migrated to systems work. Yuezeng Shen, Librarian and Head of Cataloging in the Collections & Resource Management Department, dedicated her entire career to library cataloging, especially after receiving the Ford Foundation award, which transformed her knowledge and experiences from China to the USA. Terri Greer, Acquisitions & Cataloging Specialist, began her fulltime career at the Library in 2005 and her work made the library a better place for everyone. Jeanie Radtkin, Cataloging & E-resource Specialist, began her career at the library in 2007 and has always gone the extra mile to ensure the Library’s Technical Services projects are properly developed and completed.
Anna, Yuezeng, Terri, and Jeanie now have their names inscribed on the library's new perpetual plaque (shown below), which was unveiled at their farewell party. It says
The Michael Schwartz Library recognizes employees who departed with 15 or more years of dedicated service to the campus community. Their contributions have enhanced the learning experience of students, faculty, and staff leaving a lasting legacy of excellence and commitment.
Ann Marie Smeraldi, former Library Director, is included on the plaque in honor of her memory. Last year, she was reached her 15-year milestone before her untimely passing in September.

Students Film a Romcom at the Library
A cast and crew of 20 CSU students from the Film and Media Arts School are spending some time in the Library filming a 90s inspired romcom titled “What’s My Sign Again?” for their FMA 456 Theseis II course. Grace, the student producer, said of her experience, "Filming at the Michael Schwartz Library was an excellent experience. As CSU Film students, being able to utilize a space at the school for free and with such ease was a lifesaver. Marsha (Miles) and Joellen (Corrigan) were ready and able to help us with coordinating the shoot and graciously accommodated our large crew. As a producer, the features I look for in a location are spaciousness and the ability to have freedom within the space, and we were able to have total creative freedom whilst not disturbing other students on the collaborative floor. I hope that CSU film students will opt for the use of this space in future shoots."
Are you a student who is a potential filmmaker and needs a place to film? The Library is here for you! Fill out the Student Film Shoot Facilities: Request Application along with a production schedule at least 10 days before your intended filming date.

Academic Writing Club for CSU Graduate Students & Faculty
by Mandi Goodsett, Performing Arts & Humanities Librarian, OER and Copyright Advisor
| |
Is one of your New Year’s resolutions to get more writing done? Could you use some structured time to write without interruption? Do you have some academic writing that needs polishing to become publishable? If so, this writing club is for you!
Offered by the Writing Center and the Michael Schwartz Library, this writing club is meant to help students and faculty improve their academic writing productivity. Each week we will send a short video and provide resources and advice related to an academic writing topic, and we'll have a synchronous Zoom meeting to review the topic. About 45 minutes of the meeting time will be set aside for quiet writing to keep you on track! This semester the weekly 5-minute videos will concern content from Writing Your Journal Article in 12 Weeks by Wendy Laura Belcher. You don’t need to read the book to participate.
| |
Meetings will occur in Zoom from 12 - 1pm on Mondays
beginning January 13th and ending May 5th 2025
Filling out the sign-up form does not obligate you to participate or attend every meeting; it merely puts you on our reminder email list and provides access to the Zoom link each week

Digital CSU Student Showcase
by Ben Richards, Business & Communication Librarian
Digital CSU is happy to announce the Spring 2025 Digital CSU Student Showcase, in partnership with the Michael Schwartz Library, and invites students to submit digital and multimedia projects. The Showcase will take place on Thursday, April 29, 2025 in the
Student Center Atrium from 12:30 am - 2:30 pm.
Click Image at right to access the flyer
Encourage students to participate alongside their peers! The showcase is an opportunity for students to present finished or in-progress digital research projects created for their courses to their faculty, staff, and their peers, in a poster session-style event. Digital or multimodal research projects can take many forms, but they include: websites, videos, presentations, ebooks, infographics or other data visualization projects, lesson plans, maps, timelines, podcasts, multimodal research articles, or other digital compositions and multimedia work.
HOW DO STUDENTS REGISTER
Register to participate in the event at https://forms.office.com/r/6mGNDsbtJu or by scanning the QR code on the flier.
Be prepared to share your projects at the event digitally: each participant must bring the necessary equipment (e.g. laptop, power cords, headphones, speakers, etc.). We encourage you to provide supplemental materials such as handouts about their design process, research methods, or other relevant documents; however, this is not required.
Faculty are invited to please share the invitation with their students.

Special Collections Partnerships
| |
The Michael Schwartz Library Special Collections has partnered with printmaking studio and art gallery Zygote Press on an exhibit focusing on d.a. levy’s printmaking work. levy was a Cleveland poet and printer and, while there has been considerable scholarship on his work, there has been less focus on his artistic process. The artwork on display includes one of his oil paintings, photo collages, “Cleveland Print” folios, letterpress works, and materials produced via ditto machine and mimeograph.
The exhibit, "d.a. levy: Subversive Printmaking in 1960s Cleveland," is on view at Zygote's Gallery from now until March 1st.
More information can be found at https://zygotepress.org/
| | |
Special Collections has also been in collaboration with the CSU History Department on an initiative to give their graduate students with a focus on museum studies some hands-on archival experience. We currently have four grad students working on digitizing local newspapers, inventorying unprocessed collections to create finding aids, and digitizing and cataloging photograph collections. They have been a great help and it has given them a lot of experience that will prepare them well for the field.

Important Update: Temporary Suspension of Library Orders
We would like to inform you that the library will halt all ordering for collections after the end of the day on Friday, February 28th. If you need any materials before the start of the Fall 2025 semester on August 23rd, please ensure your requests are submitted by the end of the day on February 28th.
Ordering will resume no later than August 1st, 2025, to prepare for the fall semester.
This temporary suspension is necessary as we migrate to a new library systems platform. Due to technical limitations and the need to allocate staff time effectively, we will be unable to maintain our usual acquisitions process during this period.
We appreciate your patience and cooperation as we work to improve our services. Thank you for your understanding. For more information contact your subject librarian at https://library.csuohio.edu/services/librarians.html.

Connect with CSU Faculty, A Friends of the Library Series
Tuesday, April 8, 2025
11:30 am – 12:30 p.m.
Featuring Jeremy Genovese, PhD
Emeritus Associate Professor of Human Development and Educational Psychology
Presenting ESPERANTO: The Rise and Fall and Rise of the International Language
Location: Michael Schwartz Library Connection Lounge ((1st floor, near front desk)
The constructed language Esperanto was invented in 1887 to facilitate international communication and understanding. Esperanto was designed to be easy to learn with phonetic pronunciation and a simple, consistent grammar. The Esperanto movement grew rapidly but suffered a severe setback in the run up to the Second World War. The language was specifically condemned by Hitler. Stalin labeled it “the language of > spies.” In recent decades, Esperanto has regained ground with the rise of the internet. Today the Esperanto movement is a growing transnational community of speakers who regularly communicate either virtually or in person.
This is a free event open to the campus community and the Friends of the Library.
