Recently, many dignitaries, partners and friends joined Community Teamwork to celebrate the opening of the new Lowell Women's Shelter. The shelter hopes to make a small impact on the huge need for housing for homeless women. Unlike overnight shelters that require people to seek a bed each day, the space will offer greater stability while residents navigate housing applications and other services.
After several years of planning and development, the $7 million shelter is now ready to provide a safe place to stay for over 50 women. The city of Lowell provided funding that enabled the purchase of the building, which was renovated by Community Teamwork.
Thank you and congratulations to the many people who made this plan come to fruition.
Among those attending were Congresswoman Lori Trahan, State Senator Vanna Howard, State Representative Tara Hong, Mayor Erik Gitschier, Vice Mayor Vesna Nuon and former State Senator Steve Panagiotakos. Also attending were several staff members of Davis Square Architects, the firm that designed the shelter.
CTI staff members, including Nancy Van Alst, Lisa Wholey, Ann Sirois, Meghan Siembor, Daniel Dessin, Bob Seymour, Barbara Warren, Sean Wilson and some of his Housing and Homeless Services team, Kathleen Plath, Melissa Joyce (she had the honor of cutting the ribbon) and some of her Facilities crew, Heather Ciccarelli and others - including Karen Frederick and several of CTI's Board members including Aleksandra Tugbiyele, James Hogan, Hayley Barrett and Bernadette Wheeler, were all on hand to celebrate and join in on the tour of the building.
