Celebrating the Smith Family

Deepening Community Roots Through First-Time Homeownership

In May 2026, the Smith family purchased their first home with help from CHAP-B down payment assistance, administered by Housing Solutions.

As local employees of Northern Arizona Healthcare and the City of Flagstaff, the Smith family is part of the workforce that helps make our community thrive. Now, they’re able to put down deeper roots here with a place to call their own for their daughter, their puppies, and their growing family.

“Purchasing our first home was a major milestone for our family and the beginning of a new chapter. We are grateful to have a place we can call our own, where we can build memories, create stability, and grow together for years to come.”

— The Smith Family

This is what workforce housing can make possible: helping local workers not only live where they work, but build a future in the community they call home.

CHAP-B provides first-time homebuyers with down payment assistance through $7 million in City of Flagstaff Housing Bond (Prop. 442) funds, administered by Housing Solutions.

OCTOBER HIGHLIGHTS

Volunteer of the Month

We are thrilled to highlight Fatima as our October Volunteer of the Month! Originally joining Sharon’s Attic to fulfill a class requirement, she chose to stay after being deeply inspired by our mission to support survivors of domestic violence and homelessness. Fatima loves organizing store items and truly values the warm connections she has built with her fellow volunteers and management. Kind, organized, and a vibrant presence, Fatima brings incredible positivity to our team—thank you for your continuous dedication!

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

This October, join us in raising awareness, showing support, and standing with survivors of domestic violence.

There are many ways to get involved throughout the month. Click below to view the full calendar of events.

Building Opportunities Starts at Home

Since launching in June 2021, six Housing Solutions employees have used our Employee Assistance Program to purchase a home—including one employee and her daughter in FY2026!

The program provides eligible employees with up to $10,000 in homeownership assistance, with $5,000 forgiven after five years in the home.

We’re proud to help our own team build a foundation for their futures while creating more opportunities for affordable homeownership in our community.

OCTOBER IMPACT

TRANSITIONAL HOUSING

JoJo's Place

Last month, JoJo’s Place welcomed two new households experiencing homelessness into furnished studio rentals, providing a safe place to call home and an important step toward stability.

Residents are also finding new opportunities to connect and build community. Our on-site case manager has begun hosting monthly gatherings, including JoJo’s first outdoor movie night. Residents gathered under the stars to watch The Wild Robot together, complete with movie-theater-style popcorn. These simple moments give residents a chance to relax, connect, and get to know one another and their case manager.

Sharon Manor

In September, three households who had called Sharon Manor home for 1.5 years or more transitioned into safe, affordable, permanent housing. Two of these households moved into rentals managed by Housing Solutions, and we are thrilled to see our vision—“All residents will have access to safe, decent, and affordable housing with an opportunity for upward mobility”—lived out. We celebrate their stories, how far they have come, and the new beginnings ahead, with support from our amazing Sharon Manor team.

As these households moved forward, three new households moved into Sharon Manor apartments, beginning their own journeys of healing and rebuilding after experiencing trauma and homelessness. We are honored to provide a safe, supportive place to call home as they take these next steps.

LOW-INCOME RENTALS

Flagstaff Rentals

Last month, we celebrated as a Sharon Manor resident of two years transitioned into one of Housing Solutions’ permanently affordable rentals. Today, 26 Flagstaff households call one of Housing Solutions’ permanently affordable rental homes their own, providing greater housing stability and security for local, low to moderate income families.

Oak Wash Homes

In September, one household moved out of Oak Wash Homes and another moved in, continuing the cycle of housing stability in our Cottonwood community.

Today, 29 households who previously experienced homelessness have a permanent, affordable place to call home at Oak Wash Homes, including 34 adults and three children. Formerly a motel, this adaptive reuse project launched in March 2025, and we’re proud to see it continue providing affordable housing and new opportunities for households in our community.

WORKFORCE HOUSING

Western Hills Apartments

Currently, 26 households call a Western Hills rental home. These workforce-attainable rentals, available to locals earning up to 80% AMI, are helping make it possible for Flagstaff’s teachers, healthcare workers, service workers, tradespeople, and other local workers to live in the community they help keep thriving.

HOMEOWNERSHIP ASSISTANCE

First Time Homebuyers

One Northern Arizona household became a first-time homeowner in September! With help from CHAP-B down payment assistance, administered by Housing Solutions, a single parent purchased their first home—and became the second household to purchase a former Housing Solutions rental through our Community Land Trust program.

What’s a Community Land Trust? It creates long-term affordable homeownership by separating land ownership from the home itself. The homeowner purchases the house, while the land is leased through a 99-year ground lease, helping preserve affordability for generations to come!

Help Stock Sharon Manor's Not-Food Pantry

Our new Sharon Manor not-food pantry helps residents access everyday kitchen, bathroom, laundry, and cleaning essentials, leaving more room in household budgets for other necessities like groceries.

Want to help? We welcome new, unopened items. Donations can be dropped off Monday–Thursday, 9 a.m.–3 p.m., at the Housing Solutions administrative office, 1500 E Cedar Ave, Ste. 86, Flagstaff. Thank you!
