Performing Arts Equitable Payroll Fund Saved from Proposed Cut

Thanks to the California legislature and to the advocacy of organizations and leaders throughout the state, the Performing Arts Equitable Payroll Fund was restored in the state budget that was signed on July 1. The $11.5 million program supporting small nonprofit performing arts organizations with payroll costs was part of a proposed cut in Governor Gavin Newsom’s May revise. Over $40 million in applications had already been received before the proposed cut.

Paintings from Mark Hilbert’s Collection Featured in Pageant of the Masters

Diane Challis Davy, Director of the Pageant of the Masters, stands next to the painting “Monday at the Crab Cooker” by artist Bradford J. Salamon as Mark Hilbert, founder of the Hilbert Museum, points to the depiction of himself in the painting.

Mark Hilbert, an avid art collector and co-founder of Chapman University’s Hilbert Museum of California Art, is fascinated by everyday life, making it the central theme of the artwork he exhibits. That interest in the everyday storytelling is exactly what resonated with Diane Challis Davy, longtime director of the famed Pageant of the Masters, the annual summer show in Laguna Beach that recreates artwork as living pictures. Challis Davy is incorporating five of the Hilbert-collected paintings in the pageant’s show this summer.

In Memoriam

Richard Greenberg, the most commissioned playwright in South Coast Repertory, has died at the age of 67. A two-time Pulitzer Prize finalist and Tony Award winner, Greenberg was commissioned 13 times by SCR, with the theatre premiering ten of them and producing two others over their 30-year relationship. These plays included “The Extra Man” (world premiere 1991), “Night and Her Stars” (world premiere 1994), “Three Days of Rain” (world premiere 1997 and revival in 2011) and “A Shot Rang Out” (world premiere 2021).

Rae Cohen, who helped found the Newport Theatre Arts Center in 1979, has died at the age of 89. Though she had no formal theater background, she soon became the organization’s president, a position she held for nearly 40 years. She mentored performers and volunteers alike, always believing in untapped potential. In 2022, the performance space was renamed the Rae A. Cohen Theater, a tribute to her decades of dedication and leadership.

David Edwards, a longtime resident Sound Designer at Laguna Playhouse, passed away earlier this year in May. He created sound designs for over 100 productions for the main stage and youth theatre. He also designed for companies throughout Orange County and Los Angeles, as well as for national tours. In addition, David was a freelance recording engineer and producer, recording albums for a variety of artists.
