MEN’S CLUB MEETING

Art Ondich has called a special meeting of the Men’s Club to be held on Wednesday evening, August 21st, 7:00 PM in the Manse parlor.

This is a follow-up of the August 11th meeting, where much interest was expressed concerning the possibility of sponsoring a Car Show on our campus grounds in October. The meeting will involve detailing the scope of the project and entering into the initial planning stage.

NEW MISSION PROJECT

Mission Chair Carla Tinsley has been made aware of a local family (friends of Don and Lisa Gilson) who could use some help. The young mother of 2 small children (preschool and kindergarten) is undergoing treatment for stage 4 colon cancer. Her husband is working hard to keep supporting the family at this time of extensive medical expenses, when he must be the sole provider.

With funds provided through the church Mission budget, gift cards from Publix, Winn Dixie, and Walmart will be purchased to help the family reduce expenses for basic needs (food, clothing, and general household supplies), and maybe provide some special little treats for the children.

If you would like to make a contribution to this special project you can do so between July 28 and August 18 using a Mission envelope and identifying it as for family gift cards. You can also mail a donation to the church office, 11933 SE Juno Crescent, Hobe Sound, FL 33455.

LOCALLY COLLECTED HONEY is available for “purchase” and can be ordered during coffee hour in the Fellowship Hall after the Worship Service.

T J Gilson has gotten very interested in and involved in the apiary business and has jars of local honey collected by a business in Palm City for which he works. He has jars of two kinds of local honey available.

TJ can take your orders in the Fellowship Hall after the Worship Service on Sunday, and will bring the requested honey to fellowship hour next week. The “sale price” is a voluntary contribution which will be donated to the church through the upcoming Thrift Shop that is in the process of being legally established on the church campus.

In this photo he is shown having “sold” a couple of jars of honey to Judy Doverspike.

COMMUNITY GARDEN

The community garden, approved by the Session last August, has gotten off to a slow start due to other time consuming responsibilities of the project organizers.

As a review of the garden’s beginning, the Community Garden was proposed as a joint a project of the Loxa-Lucie Headwaters Initiative, the Hobe Sound Community Chest, and the Guardians of Martin County. They asked that our church host the project by allowing use of a portion of our property for the garden. The garden would be created, supervised and funded by this group, with Sal Orofino as its representative. It would be a “community focused garden” planted and tended by community neighbors. The only responsibility of the church would be to provide the land and the needed water. Elder Cynthia Cooper agreed to serve as liaison between the church and the garden group.

So far several stands have been installed, garden bins attached and planted. Some of the gardens have thrived and produced produce, while others have, for various reasons, failed to take hold. When it is determined that the gardens will grow successfully, the organizing group will determine how the individual garden bins will be distributed to the individuals or groups who want to “adopt” them and tend to them.

As the garden development continues, landscaping around and throughout the garden will provide garden paths and a few benches, adding beauty and diversity. Last week, Blue Water Landscaping Co. began the process by installing plantings and a path through the garden bin stands.

A major focus of the garden will be a mural, painted by renowned professional artist and muralist Nadia Utto, It will be part of the Hobe Sound Mural Project, begun in 2007,

The mural will cover the west wall of the storage building, facing the garden. The figures in this mural will represent various time periods in history since the church was built.

Thanks to several members and friends of the church, the area around the mural wall has been cleared and the wall cleaned and is almost for the mural painting to begin.

HOBE SOUND COMMUNITY PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
BUILDING IMPROVEMENT PROJECT

BUILDING ON A STRONG FOUNDATION

On January 10, 1926, Hobe Sound Community Church was organized under the supervision of the Presbyterian Church, USA.
As we look toward our 100th birthday, we are making plans for the exciting centennial celebration to take place in the year 2026. These plans include an ambitious and much needed Building Improvement Plan extending through 2025, and beyond. All donations to this fund-raising campaign to help maintain and preserve our historical church facility will be warmly received and appreciated.

THE FIRST PHASE OF THE BUILDING IMPROVEMENT PLAN consisted of installation of new storm resistant windows in the Sanctuary and Manse, and accompanying needed repairs. That phase has been completed.

THE SECOND PHASE OF THE PLAN consisted of renovations in the kitchen and fellowship hall. That phase has been completed.

THE THIRD PHASE OF THE PLAN consisted of repair and painting of the church steeple.

THE FOURTH AND FINAL PHASE OF THE PLAN will be replacement of the church roof and attached structures.

Special recognition is due to Elder Raelyn Holmes, the chairman of the Building and Grounds Committee. She has taken charge of all the detailed work involved in getting bids, selecting vendors, keeping track of work schedules, checking on work-site progress and being available to the work crew for questions. Thank you, Raelyn, for all the time and effort you have put into this and the many previous building improvement projects.
