Windsor is setting a global example in sustainability by becoming the first location to achieve a net-zero wastewater process!
The NetZero wastewater initiative is based on three key pillars: powering the entire wastewater treatment process with 100% clean energy, reusing 100% recycled water, and reusing 100% biosolids.
| | |
|
|
More Purple Pipe, Please!
For years, Windsor has used recycled water for irrigation in parks, at the golf course, and in residential and commercial landscaping. It’s even used for flushing toilets at the high school and Fire Station No. 2.
Now, with an expanded recycled water system, Windsor will reuse 100% of its recycled water, meaning no more discharge into Mark West Creek. By increasing the amount of recycled water used for irrigation, we are protecting our valuable drinking resource for just that… drinking! Every gallon of recycled water used is one gallon of potable water saved.
| |
|
Charting our Destiny to Rate Stability
Windsor currently pays an outside contractor to transport and treat the biosolids that result from our wastewater treatment. When we upgrade to Class A biosolids, Windsor will be one of the first in California to use a cutting-edge treatment system called pyrolysis. This advanced treatment will transform biosolids into nutrient-rich soil additives that can be used on local landscapes.
The benefits? Reduced disposal costs, stabilized utility rates, and greener landscaping, all managed by the Town.
Solar & Geothermal Energy Solution
Windsor has already achieved its first NetZero goal—using 100% clean energy to power the wastewater treatment plant. The Town installed a floating solar array three years ago, which now generates 73% of the energy needed to run the plant. The remaining 27% comes from Sonoma Clean Power, which sources solar and geothermal energy from the Geysers. Part of our recycled water is transported there to use during geothermal energy production.

You may have noticed some striping changes around Town as we are in the process of updating and refreshing pavement markings.
Please bear with us as they are installed, they may not make complete sense until they are finished, although they are safe.
New markings at some of the crosswalks are yield markers that highlight the crosswalk and serve to remind drivers of where to stop when someone is in the crosswalk. Be sure to always follow these proper crosswalk safety tips.

Are you aware that not all e-bikes are made the same?
There are 3 types of e-bikes based on speed and power control. Access to bike infrastructure such as bike paths, bike lanes, bike routes, and protected lanes are different but rules and legal requirements are the same.
Do you know the new rules and regulations, to learn more about the California New E-Bike Law AB 1774 click here. For more information on e-bikes visit http://www.peopleforbikes.org/pages/e-bikes.

Efforts to establish SMART Quiet Zones in Windsor are underway!
On October 15, Public Works staff met with representatives of SMART, the Federal Railroad Administration, and the California Public Utilities Commission to further the application to establish a Quiet Zone along the SMART extension through Windsor.
The meeting was led by the Town’s Quiet Zone consultant, RailPros. Road crossings at Shiloh Road, Mitchell Lane, and the Windsor Rd & Windsor River Road roundabout were reviewed in the field in addition to the pedestrian crossing at the platform.
