Q&A with Nevada U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto

In this feature, we take a deeper dive into the life of the first Latina elected to the U.S. Senate.

Q: What is your greatest legislative accomplishment?

A: I’m not done yet, but one thing I’m proud of is passing the bipartisan Savanna’s Act and the Not Invisible Act. These laws help law enforcement address the issue of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and keep Tribal communities safe. This is an issue that gets far too little attention, and I was proud to help get this done.

Q: What is your favorite Nevada tradition?

A: Nevada Day

Q: Is there a United States Senator (living or deceased) whom you have modeled your public service after?

A: It’s hard to choose. I have deep respect for Senators Harry Reid and Richard Bryan. They always put Nevada first and that is something I admire deeply.

Q: What is something people might be surprised to learn about you?

A: I play the guitar. My grandfather played and I picked it up from him.

Q: What is your favorite way to spend a (rare) day off?

A: I love to go for hikes in our amazing state and national parks.

Q: Favorite state park?

A: It’s impossible to pick one. But I love Valley of Fire since it is so easy to access from Las Vegas.

Q: If someone was visiting Nevada for the first time, what is one thing you would tell them they have to do?

A: It’s hard to choose just one thing – the whole state is worth experiencing. If I had to choose, I’d say enjoy some of Nevada’s beautiful public lands. The Strip is amazing, but people forget we have some of the best outdoor spaces in the world!

Q: Explain the biggest difference between working as the Attorney General of Nevada and as the senior senator from Nevada in Washington, D.C.?

A: In Washington, you need to have patience because it takes a little longer to get things done. Sometimes, it feels like the federal government moves slowly, but that doesn’t mean nothing is happening. In fact, so much bipartisan work goes on behind the scenes that no one knows about. Just look at the huge bipartisan housing bill we were able to pass this year to help lower costs for Nevadans.

Q: When you graduated from college, what did you think you would be doing career-wise?

A: I was a finance major and thought I would work on Wall Street. It was only after law school that I realized I wanted to spend my career in public service.

Q: Favorite dessert?

A: Anything dark chocolate

From Homeless to Housed

How a news reporter, non-profit and PR team changed a life

By Heather Austin, Principal

Twelve months ago, Marc was beginning a new chapter of his life. Today, he is celebrating something he once thought might be out of reach: one full year of stable employment and housing.

Marc's journey to stability was not easy. For more than a decade, he worked as a long-haul truck driver in Texas. When his marriage fell apart, he turned to alcohol to cope with the pain. Eventually, a DUI cost him his CDL, his career, and the stability he had worked so hard to build.

Determined to change the course of his life, Marc got sober and committed himself to a fresh start.

After moving to Arizona to stay with family, Marc eventually found himself without housing and sleeping outside near a Family Dollar store in Phoenix. While looking for a way forward, he saw an ABC 15 news story coordinated by PR firm The Ferraro Group about Entryway – a national non-profit workforce development, employment, and housing program – and decided to apply. Entryway Arizona Executive Director, Mandy Porter-Griffith, secured Marc a spot at Rosalie’s Place, a workforce shelter operated by St. Vincent de Paul, where he began rebuilding his life from the ground up.

Despite having limited technology skills and no experience using many of the tools required for today's job search, Marc showed up every day ready to learn. Through Entryway, he enrolled in the Make-Ready Maintenance training program hosted by real estate development and property management company PB Bell, and supported by local staffing agency, The Phoenix Staffing. Both organizations invested in Marc's success, helping him overcome challenges and build confidence along the way.

In June 2025, Marc was hired by PB Bell as a Make-Ready Technician. One year later, he remains employed, housed, and thriving.

"Working here has been absolutely wonderful," Marc shared. "I've finally been able to save money, and I'm so grateful to no longer be living in a shelter."

Over the last year, Marc has accomplished far more than maintaining employment. He purchased a vehicle, obtained health insurance through his employer, and even purchased burial insurance, something he jokes most people don't think about but that represented an important step toward long-term security and planning for the future. More importantly, Marc says he has regained something that homelessness had taken from him: his confidence.

"I have gained so much stability and confidence," he said. "Starting out in a shelter at my age really took away my confidence. I feel great now."

Marc's story is a powerful reminder that it is never too late to rebuild. Through determination, hard work, and the support of employers willing to provide an opportunity, Marc transformed a period of homelessness and uncertainty into a future filled with stability, purpose, and hope.

Nevada Athletes Shine on the National Stage

By Hannah Reizenstein, Senior PR Account Executive

Nevada athletes brought home some serious hardware this summer, with both Special Olympics Nevada and Nevada Donor Network’s Team Nevada making their mark at national competitions.

At the 2026 Special Olympics USA Games in Minnesota, Nevada’s athletes competed in bowling, swimming and track & field. Despite having the smallest state delegation, Team Nevada earned 16 medals: three gold, four silver, five bronze and four additional placement medals. Nevada also celebrated a major first, sending its first-ever pentathlon athlete to the USA Games, who came home with gold.

Meanwhile, Nevada Donor Network sent 14 athletes to represent Team Nevada at the 2026 Transplant Games of America in Denver. The team, made up of transplant recipients, living donors and donor family members, brought home an impressive 39 medals: 25 gold, nine silver and five bronze, across events including swimming, track & field and cycling.

From Minnesota to Colorado, these Nevadans have made us all proud!
