Nearly 200 artists, arts and community-based organizations, and supporters gathered at the biennial Arts Summit held on Monday, October 30 at Dover Downs Hotel & Casino. Speakers included First Lady Tracey Quillen Carney, Lt. Governor Bethany Hall-Long, and Secretary of State, Jeffrey Bullock. View some of our video clips from the day's artistic performances above.
The Arts Summit, held every two years, brings together Delaware’s arts community to connect, learn, and get inspired. The speakers and sessions illuminated ways to create value and increase the impact of the arts to purposefully enhance well-being, understanding, learning, and creativity for all.

Owing to Circumstances (detail),
mixed media, 2017
|
|
Owing to Circumstances
will be on view in the Mezzanine Gallery from November 3-22, 2017. An opening reception to meet the artist will be held on Friday, November 3 from 5-7 p.m. Borders received a
2017 Emerging Fellowship in Sculpture.
Borders designed this installation specifically for the Mezzanine Gallery after multiple visits and meetings with staff. The exhibition was inspired by her own family’s immigration story and the stories from a previous installation in which Borders asked visitors to sit and write in a notebook about their family’s history and why they came to the United States. The artist transcribed these responses in the handwriting of each author into drawings that will be suspended from the ceiling in the Gallery. Visitors will have the opportunity to add their own family’s history to her notebook. With this work, Borders hopes to “stimulate conversations about where we have come from, our current places in this country, and in this world.”

The Mezzanine Gallery, open weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., is located in the

Re-Entry
is a project directed and choreographed by A. T. Moffett, the recipient of a 2017 Delaware Division of the Arts Fellowship in Dance: Choreography. The free performance on November 10 at 7 p.m. at the baby Grand is the culmination of an interdisciplinary, arts-based research project involving veterans, dancers, educators, historians, therapists, and several art organizations.
The performance features original choreography and music, poetry, and oral history.
Moffett hopes “that both participants and audience members will gain a deeper understanding of the veteran experience and how we might better support those who serve in the re-entry process."
