President's Message

Welcome to spring as our northern hemisphere tilts toward the sun in this portion of its orbit. At our San Diego latitude, we don't really enjoy seasons per se, but, as spring yields to summer, we do look forward to the melting of our marine layer (that's what we call our coastal cloud cover during "May Gray" and "June Gloom" months). One telltale sign that our weather is warming are all those Arizona license plates seen arriving on our beach boulevards! Refugees from the Phoenix furnace.

The spring we've been busy at OSI with podcasts and webinars featuring our experience in competency modeling and its applications. We're going to use this edition of the Navigator to reprise, and link those events. Yes, partly unabashed marketing, but also a decent summary of our accumulated experience over 40+ years in consulting.

Peanut Butter & Chocolate Webinar

Bruce Griffiths M.S.

With colleague Rob Toomey at TYPECOACH (www.typecoach.com) we recently co-hosted a live webinar on the powerful diagnostic combination of two talent frameworks, i.e., personality and performance models. OSI's Polaris® Competency Model provides one lens through a library of skillsets that describe necessary performance dimensions at work (how you actually show up in your role). The TYPECOACH dynamic personality assessment provides insight into a participant's personality profile (i.e., extroverted or introverted, planful or spontaneous, etc. - who you are). In the webinar we explored how personality creates headwinds, tailwinds, and cross currents to performance at work. Participants were asked to discuss how personality might influence two important competencies, Problem Solving & Decision Making and Organizing & Planning at work.

We've always appreciated the ATD quote that "Development without diagnosis is like planting cut flowers!" So the deep diagnosis of first personality, then the translation to performance (competencies), provides an absolutely necessary starting point for personal development. You must know where you are to chart where you're going. And the combination of these two frameworks can provide that clarity.

Leadership & Creativity Webinar

We've also recently collaborated on a PODCAST with creativity guru Sura Al-Naimi (https://www.hihellosura.com/) during which we discussed our Polaris® Competency Model in the context of leadership development. The PODCAST did a deep dive into the Creativity competency as it supports one of the three fundamental, costumer facing, values needed in most organizations, namely Quality, Service, and Innovation. Creativity fuels innovation, so it's an important ingredient in talent management systems, especially when selecting and developing roles with creative responsibilities.

Creativity does present an organizational conundrum. While imagination and innovation are definitely needed to stay on the leading edge (e.g., how is AI impacting your organization?) not every role needs Creativity listed in the job description (e.g., think Airline Pilot, as I, for one, would like my aircraft commander to stick to protocols and procedures!). So knowing when and how to feature the Creativity competency is very important.

But in general the divergent thinking that Creativity allows a leader is an essential ingredient in both Decision Making and Strategic Thinking, where paradigms must be challenged and new solutions surfaced.
