Home Architecture Camp
An Educational Resource Created by AIA Cleveland

In March of this year, we all found ourselves confronted with a new reality and were introduced to a “Stay at Home” policy for parents and children. This situation provided us with both a challenge and an opportunity. Parents were tasked to provide an educational experience with little practice and a need to entertain their children. Under these circumstances, those of us in the architecture community came to recognize that we might provide leadership in producing a resource parents could access to provide both education, as well as, entertainment. By developing such a resource, we could both contribute to young people gaining a greater appreciation and understanding of architecture. To this end, we developed an activity package and curriculum available to local communities and individuals to support the effort to educate and entertain through architecture. The document identified as the “Kid’s Home Architecture Camp” was the initial launch of this idea.

Review of the initial document by AIA National leaders resulted in the suggestion to reproduce this program as an initiative of the local chapter. Following discussions with Jodi van der Wiel, 2020 AIA Cleveland President, we began collaboration on a new version of this resource. The now titled, “Home Architecture Camp”, is a more robust and inclusive document with links to videos, greater depth on subjects and more insight into the introduction to architecture.

In developing this edition of the program, Jodi embraced the project with great enthusiasm and thought reaching out to engage others who could add more volume to the resource we have now created. With the help of additional hands, this resource can be used by school children of various ages for both entertainment and education through the lens of design thinking and architecture.

We hope this document can be shared with parents, educators, children, architects and others interested in the built environment. We are sure people will find its broad spectrum of programs in the areas of history, design, building, sustainability, drawing, coloring and creating to be an engaging and stimulating support for stay at home education.

We wish to acknowledge and thank AIA Cleveland for its support of the project. We, also, wish to recognize the following contributors who have helped to make this as valuable a resource as it can be:

Jeremy Smith, AIA of Bialosky Partners, Cleveland
Bruce Bondy of Bondy Studio Architectural Illustrations
Patrick Thorpe, AIA of Allegedly Design and the Florida Foundation for Architecture

Richard Fleischman, FAIA, lived by his motto, “Tomorrow is not a new yesterday.” He approached everything with tremendous passion and optimism. As he continued to lead his firm of 57 years, people would marvel at the vigor in which he lived life, to which he would respond, “I wake up every day saying, what an opportunity I have to be creative. Another day to share ideas. Another day for my mind to discover…what could be.”

Many of Cleveland‘s architecture firms are currently being led by Fleischman alumni. No matter the length of their time spent in his office, the impact he had on how they approach design is no doubt profound. Richard taught so many of us about much more than architecture and design. Primarily, how to be passionate about what you do and to enjoy life to its fullest every single day. One of his best-known sayings that epitomized this was, “If you’re not on the edge, you’re taking up too much room.” He pushed everyone to lead with bold ideas and to be their absolute best.

Richard designed hundreds of award-winning buildings, but his impact that will be remembered is the countless lives that he inspired. His designs reflected who he was…complete transparency. He would say, “Every time you meet another human being, your life gets to be richer. We have so much to offer each other.”   Evident by the 70+ innovative churches he designed, the spaces he created were meant to bring people together, through the beauty of transparency, in order to find a new dimension of humanity.

Richard always found a reason to celebrate. Today we can celebrate the incredible life he lived.

AIA Re-Occupancy Assessment Tool

Architects and allied professionals are in a unique position to coordinate a range of mitigation strategies that, in aggregate, reduce the risk of exposure to and transmission of COVID-19 within non-health care settings. The goal of this assessment tool is to promote best practices that protect the health, safety, and welfare of the public while creating opportunities for businesses, schools, restaurants, and other non-essential facilities to provide services.
This document provides architects, private clients, and civic leaders a framework of strategies for reoccupying buildings and businesses that are in the process of transitioning from being fully closed to fully open; including:

  • baseline parameters for re-occupancy
  • architectural and engineering strategies for site and site arrival, building envelope, fixtures and furnishings, plumbing and HVAC
  • administrative policies and procedures to reduce the spread of pathogens and support physical distancing
  • policies and procedures related to PPE
